re: What do you tip at a restaurant?

At a decent restaurant most people feel obligated to tip if even they're going to leave a buck or two on a $50 meal.

I guess that I just think different. When I go to a restaurant, I already know that I'm giving at least a 20% tip. If I was ever in a financial bind and couldn't afford the tip, I would stay my arse at home, or go to McDonald's.

Whatever the service deserves. Generally 15-20%.

All the down votes when stating that the norm is 20% shows me how young the majority is on this board.

20%, rounded up to the nearest dollar.

I tip generously because I am a regular a lot of places and they are doing something for me I am glad I never had to do. I also figure they need the couple of dollars more than I do and I don't donate enough to charity so it makes up for that somewhat by giving it to people I like.
Sometimes, however, the tip I want to leave is "You should get another job because you aren't very good at this one."

15% is generally what they get

I've only read about half the thread so forgive me if it's been brought up already, but who decides the "norm?" About 6 years ago I was told that it was 18%. Now it's 20%. And why should the percentage increase so much when wage stagnation is a problem across many industries.
I also can't fathom the number of people in this thread that say they tip for shitty service. I get that servers typically make far less than minimum wage, but that's not really a valid argument for tipping on poor service. Plus, the law generally states that if their $2.50/hr or whatever it is isn't supplemented up to minimum wage by tips, the employer is responsible for making up the difference.

15% is the starting point. If I get good service it goes up to 20%, impeccable service gets more. Just depends on the situation.
I've had really shitty service a couple times and that server got 0. All times it was due to their performance and had nothing to do with how busy the place was or how the kitchen was backed up.

20% of total bill including tax for solid service.
15% of total bill for below average service- food doesnt come out at same time, main dish comes while I am still eating salad, I have to wait more than 5 minutes after I finish my drink to be asked if I would want another, etc.
10% for bad service- rude, disappears for an hour, puts hand over top of glasses or in food, etc.
10% for take out if waiter or bartender.
0% for take out if owner.

I absolutely will never tip on takeout. It's akin to tipping the McDonalds drive thru employee.
No it is not. The restaurant you are grabbing takeout from doesn't likely have a drive thru service. Also...in some restaurants the servers take turns being assigned takeout. So they aren't paid that much to do it. They have to make sure your order is correct from the kitchen and put all the extras you requested with it. Not saying they deserve 20% by any means. But you could at least tip a buck or two for the convenience of being able to get takeout from that restaurant. And to show you aren't a cheap a-hole.

my experience the people that are in the worst financial states are also the ones tip a lot.
Very much not the case

I don't tip. Their employer should pay them according to how valuable their service is. If they don't, that's not my fault

That guy.
There's always at least one. Why am I not surprised that it's you?

Depends upon the quality of the service

20% of the pre tax price.

I do that for open bars. Tip high up front. And always have a drink ready for me when I need to get sauced.

I try not to unless I'm with a girl or something
If anything, I'll write on the tip line "here's a tip, get a real job"
