Coolers cool. Meaning, they have refrigeration. Gas stations have drink coolers, restaurants have walk in coolers, etc.

An ice chest is a chest of ice.

Ice chest is the correct term.

69. It’s always been an ice chest. Yankees are the only people who call it a cooler. Southerners put all their cokes and beer in an ice chest. Yankees put pops in a cooler.

Cokes are any soft drink regardless of flavor. Yankees drink Pepsi and pops. I don’t like Yankee accents either.

Seems like a Louisiana/Miss thing

Growing up in GA I don't think I ever heard "ice chest", nor when in school in AL.

I've only heard my Mississippi/ Louisiana in laws use "ice chest".
I've only heard "cooler".

So what do you call the container that holds five gallons of ice and water?

It all depends. If the water is in bottles, I cqll it an ice chest. If the water is simply poured in with the ice, I call it a real big glass!

I grew up in Alabama and have lived here most of my life. Almost no one I know uses the term ice chest.
