50, North Alabama cooler. Never heard someone call it an ice chest in real life.

I feel like I use these terms interchangeably. Really thinking about it, I know I used them both...I feel like I probably use "cooler" more often, though.

That’s what I have in my house, otherwise Ice Chest, my Northern wife (no pics) says cooler.
I think yankee migration into the sunbelt might have something to do with the rise of "cooler." Always said Ice chest growing up. And, of course, PawPaw called the thing in the kitchen an ice box.

I definitely say both, but thinking about it, I don't know the rationale. Maybe I call hard ones ice chests and soft ones coolers.

I'm binary when it comes to this.

All my life I've been referring to it as an ice chest and so have all my friends and family. But lately I've been hearing many people call it a cooler
I noticed this same thing recently. Makes me more inclined to say ice chest.

Only people who grew up in South Louisiana and maybe Mississippi call it an ice chest.

So what do you call the container that holds five gallons of ice and water?

Ice chest. You plug a cooler into an outlet

What's an ice box though?
Ice box is the refrigerator/freezer, per my Grandma

Seems like a Louisiana/Miss thing
Growing up in GA I don't think I ever heard "ice chest", nor when in school in AL.
