There are two types of sexual addiction, one is a person that requires the physical act of having sex on a frequent basis above all else to the point it is disruptive to their life, and that of their partner, it does not have to be with multiple partners. The second type is what your group friend is engaging in, and is very similar to gambling addiction. A gambling addict could care less about the winning of money, they are chasing the high they get from when the dice roll, or wheel spins ect. until the moment it stops, they don't care if they win or lose as long as they can play again. Your friend doesn't care about the physical sex/orgasm, the pursuit of new partners gives him his high, the sex is the final score, but like the gambler means the game is over along with the high, and the only solution is to do it again.

Sex addiction is a bit of an amorphous term. Because sex addiction is a process addiction, not a substnce addiction. So its a little more difficult to quantify. Based on the information you’ve given, its hard to say. Because it is a process addiction, understanding and diagnosing it goes on a lot more beneath the surface ... as opposed to saying he has sex this often, etc etc therefore he is a sex addict.

One fairly easy, catch all question (though still not the “end-all” diagnostic tool) is — has sex and the pursuit of it created problems in his life that have ever seemed unmanageable?

Again, we don’t know for sure based on what you said, bit as others have pointed out, its likely that his life is unmanageable at times to be able to keep that constant flow of new partners sexually. Just a guess.

How long has he been doing this?

I was on a streak when I was young where it was nothing more than a challenge. Like playing the market or gambling with a certain strategy, you wanted to see how far that strategy could take you. I bagged a whole lot of women using a particular strategy and routine...it was an empowering feeling to know you won before the game was even played (with rare exception).

Is that addictive behavior or just a phase? It really could boil down to something as simple as he doesn't have anything better to do with his weekends than playing a silly sex game.

Maybe it’s a curse or maybe it’s healthy.
