I see a lot of posts ribbing operator Baws about having truck nutz and only making 65k a year working everyday of their life on overtime.

I know a couple of guys that work as operators but I’m not really sure what exactly it is that they do... these guys claim to make mid 100’s, one even as much as 170 & 175 the last two years.

The OT makes it sound like they’re rig hands.

What’s the truth OT?

Truth is you are punching a clock at Home Depot and trying to find out if you are qualified for a plant operator job.

I’m guessing you aren’t.

Depends what plant they are at. A lot of times, they are just looking at screens are levels to make sure nothing is going out of whack. If there are valves that aren't automatic, part of their job may be to open and close some. Since they can make overtime, it really pays off especially being single. My dad works in a plant but on the maintenance side. I prefer the normal work week.

They are professional baby sitters. They don't make their money when things go right. They get paid for their knowledge of what to do when things go wrong

Ensure steady production in a unit. Turn valves, check flow rates, temps and pressures and do quality checks. Without OT (which is laughable) = ~75k. I know guys who have made over 200k, but thats not usual. Over 100k easy with OT.

they look at some instruments and when one gauge moves past a threshold, they call somebody else to come turn a valve. They make about $50/hr and work 60 hour weeks.

Actual work consist of running very dangerous manufacturing units. Their job entails running the boards that control the distillation and reaction processes, outside techs opening valves, sampling product, issuing work permits, tagging equipment for maintenance to work on, and lots of other stuff. They do a good bit of training and depending on the unit can be extremely busy for their 12 hr. shifts or if they are lucky and in a good unit they can be bored to death. Yes, the do eat good at times but they also bust their butts at times.
Pay wise their base is under $100,000 but most work enough overtime to pull down $130-150,000. They can have it, living out there and not having time off to enjoy it sucks.

Sit on their arse, get moody when asked to get off their arse, stare at their 401ks all day, and sit around and bitch about people that have an ounce of motivation in their lives.

They also make around $100k give or take. They think they're rich but don't realize any professional actually makes that easily and doesn't have to work a shite ton of overtime, holidays, and nights to get it. Most are still stuck in the 1970s.
