Sounds like he is softening you up before he tells you he has been fricking your wife for two years now and it's hurting him so much inside but now the only way to avoid suicide is for you to forgive and forget. You don't need blood on your hands.

I have one of those friends. My strategy is to one-up him on woe is me.
"My gf just dumped me."
My mom just admitted to ICU after a seizure that broke most of her face.
"My job is a dead end"
My dad just got diagnosed with cancer.
And so forth.

A lot of people that have suicidal thoughts don't really tell anyone about them. They simply go through the act out of nowhere. They might anonymously mention it on websites where they feel safe because no one really knows who you are unless you out yourself.
He's probably just depressed. So, suggesting professional help was a great start. Probably want to tell him to quit drinking.
I wouldn't be worried unless he begins to seclude himself away from what his normal activities are. Once he starts to avoid you, his family, other friends, job, responsibilities, etc then do more than just be there for him.
Otherwise, just talk to him and help him cope with whatever he is dealing with. Make him see what he's going through from a different perspective.

Call the cops, tell them he’s suicidal and get him PEC’d.
During those minimum 72 hours, they’ll medicate him to stabilize his neurochemistry and keep him away from booze.
That can be the difference for a lot more people than you might suspect.
Suicide is no joke. If he follows through, you have to live with the what if’s. Personally, I wouldn’t want that on my conscience.
It will be embarrassing for your friend, and he might hate you for it initially, but if he’s alive in a year he’ll thank you for saving his life.
That is if he’s serious. If he’s just attention seeking, he’ll be mad at you regardless.
That said, IMO, you can’t assume he isn’t serious. I’d rather lose a friend and the friend live than have to live with knowing he reached out to me for help and I didn’t do all I could to help him.

Do this for him. Check out local psychiatrists ratings in the area, give him some names and numbers. He needs to make a call and a psychiatrist will be able to offer some meds or a combo of meds and a mental health therapist can help. Don’t wait any longer if he is truly your friend!

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

What is his profession? Can he get help without losing occupational licensing? Try and get him to an ER or call a hotline or something.

He has a spiritual problem that only can be solved by a spiritual solution. He has a void in his heart where a spiritual relationship is meant to reside. Trying to replace it with other things won’t work and ultimately, will take its toll on the person’s mind.
Prayer
Church
Talk to a pastor
Invite him to church with you
Go to church with him
A Bible study
Etc

Having had a similar experience, I think this is what it is.
Looking for some reassurance.

This is the last thing I would do. Not all cops are properly trained to handle this situation. More than one mentally ill person has been killed by the cops.
The ER or recommending a psychiatric professional are better ideas.

God loves him

A friend of mine went through this type of depression when he got a divorce.
Prozac helped him a lot he took it for about a year then when he got over it and all of the stuff settled he stopped taking it and never had an issue again

Finally letting go of religion and god helped me immensely. REligion/faith might help some but it was hurting me. I grew up going to church daily, a lot of pressure from family to be religious. I was trying to force something I didnt believe in and felt like a piece of shite for not believing.
Not saying a god wouldn't help this guy, but not everybody needs one.

This. On May 19, 2016 my youngest niece was staying with her boyfriend while he was working out of town. They had an argument before he left for work and she texted him that day that she was going to kill herself. On the way from work he called the cops to meet him there because he wanted help. The cops went in and talked to her to see if she was a threat to herself. They walked out and told her boyfriend she was fine. That is when she shot herself.
So not all cops are trained to handle someone who is suicidal.
