Tell him that you are there for him. Give him suicide hotline numbers. Like others have said help him find a professional to talk and figure out what is depressing him.

Real talk:
Who are you/we to decide when someone wants to take their own life? Why do we, as a society, place ourselves as our brother’s keepers during times like this?
It isn’t our business. If your buddy wants to take his life, why do you think he should seek help? Seems selfish on our part.

I had a buddy of mine who struggled with depression and confided in me that he had suicidal thoughts. Spoke with a priest friend on how to proceed. The first thing he told me was to remember no matter what your friend does, you are not responsible for his actions. My buddy got help and he's been doing well since then.

Help him find a good psychiatrist (MD), check in on him as best you can and listen when you do talk. He obviously trusts you and appreciates your friendship. Just being there for him will make a big difference in his life. I pray your friend has a turnaround like mine did.

Because suicidal thoughts are almost universally situational and temporary. Knowing this means intervening as suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. If you're not there for your buddy in the darkest moment of his life then what the frick good are you?

Check on him regularly! Go pick him up and go fishing. Be that buddy he needs. He trusts you or he wouldn't have reached out. If he gets better he'll be glad you were there, if he doesn't you'll be glad you tried.

You can't fix him, but you can be his battle buddy when he needs one

Because most times its caused by a chemical imbalance mentally. And this person reached out, meaning he wants someone to know and help.

My dad did it about 9 yrs ago. He was getting treatment for PTSD at the VA and was in a Vietnam vets support group. He never mentioned his thoughts to us. The fact that your friend mentioned it to you tells me he wants help. Get him the help he needs before he takes matters into his own hands.

Don’t let him go radio silent. Text, call, email, badger.

He chose you to see him through this....do whatever you can do to help him. Don't just tell him to see a shrink, make the call for him and drive him there if you need to. Remind him that whatever he is feeling is only temporary and let him know that, whatever he needs, you're there for him. If he tries to diminish the conversation you guys shared, don't let him...if he had that talk with you, regardless of how he feels days later and sober, you, and he, need to take it serious.

I really liked what someone else mentioned earlier, too....mention depression to the wife without going into too much detail...just ask her to keep an eye on him.

First off to those with stupid replies - frick YOU!

Suicide is not a joke.

Now to you and some advice. Talk to him frequently he has to seek help. There are many reasons one can feel suicidal some are easier “fixes” than others. To figure it out he needs to talk to a good psychologist- a good one.

He needs to know he isn’t a burden and can call you at anytime. Watch for additional signs - growing more distant, fake brave face, weird purchased all can be bad omens.

The key is for him to know these thoughts while abnormal and unhealthy aren’t totally under his control. He needs to seek help, if he won’t you need to find it for him and take him.

Suggest to him that he go talk to a professional. Reassure him that the tough times are typically transient, although a hard sell to someone down in a dark hole. Remind him of all the people around him that care for him.

That’s called a conscience and it’s for your moral compass. Sounds like instead of fixing the issue, you ran from it. That’s ok, but I bet you still feel that inner voice as you search for something to make your life complete. Good news is, there’s still time.

He’s waiting for you.

60% of gun deaths in the US are suicides. 38% are murders or other deaths such as police shootings. 2% are mass shootings.

Guess which ones make the news? Hint, not suicides. The state of mental health in our country is abysmal. We have all but given up on funding mental health programs. I just can't understand how we can have such a burgeoning welfare state but pass on something as socially critical as mental health.

Thank you for trying to help your friend. It may be the only help he can find, or afford. I hope he makes it.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

800-273-8255

Ask him to keep this number in his cell in case he's unable to reach you at any time.

Tell him to see his GP and the GP can refer to him a psychiatrist. GP's can sometimes treat on their own, but I wouldn't trust them to do so. They are largely ignorant about psychiatry.
