re: What do high school AP classes do?

My godson took AP classes at a Catholic HS and went into an honors college as a second semester sophomore.
The way I look at it, parents paid high school to save a year and a half of college tuition.

Is spring testing still a thing? That’s where I tested out of all my classes, along with the ACT.
My HS didn’t have AP courses

Separates the nerds from the cool kids and gives the former a sense of superiority.

I see this as a benefit if it allows to bypass college math. I fricking hated all the math I had to take as a non-traditional, so I do support that. I'm talking math 005 to taking advanced stats and econometrics. So many damn classes that I had to take.

Dual Enrollment >>> Advanced Placement
No kidding! My son is in a dual credit program. He'll be a HS junior next month but by Christmas, he'll be a college soph. He'll graduate HS with an Associates Degree from college and 60 credit hours.
I really wish they would have had this when I was in HS.
As a parent, I am loving the 60 free college credits.

Depends on the school. My college would give you credit for 3 hours at a 2-3 or 6 hours at a 4-5, IIRC.
The exception was AP Biology, which was all or nothing.

That's true as well, but if you are a full time student, fall, spring, and summer you can achieve the same thing. I had associates under 2, bachelor's at 3.5 and grad school accepted after that.

You had an associates when you graduated HS?

Gives you college credit.
I received 13 hours of Spanish credit.
Meaning I did not have to take a single foreign language in college.

It keeps quiet, intelligent kids from having to sit in the same classes with the loud, rude, belligerent population.

My AP biology teacher was one of the best tso teachers in the country. Other than he used to show us gross stds and laugh and say “y’all are horny bury your duck will rot off if you stick your dick wrong.”

How do AP classes work vs regular when taught by the same teacher? A bit more challenging?
Your are taking a college level class, using a college level book, and in order to get college credit, you need to score high enough on the end of class test to receive credit (usually a 4 or 5) and not all universities will accept/give credit for all AP classes
Similar to testing out of a class/subject

Typically the AP classes are void of the dindu homeworks and those arseclowns who interrupt the learning process. It is what it is……

Equity. We all have to suck or it won't be "equal."

AP classes gave me college credits that allowed me to graduate undergrad in 7 semesters and I only took 12 hours the last 3 semesters I was there. Since I went to LSU I was able to roll my final semester of TOPS scholarship over to my MBA. For me, AP classes did quite a bit.

Why not challenge all the same if we preach equality?
Your premise would make sense if all students didn't have access to the course. At our school, anyone can sign up for an AP course and the test (where you get the college credit). Whether you pass it is a different story.

Yep, it defeats the purpose of a lot of the AP courses if you plan on going to LSU. Especially Physics, Math, and Chemistry. For math, most high schools probably don't offer a non-AP calculus course, but if you can make a 3 on that exam, you could probably ace the LSU placement test. For Chemistry and Physics, AP courses only count for the non-STEM Major versions of the course. Physics 1001/1002 not Physics 2101/2102.
LSU also offers a foreign language placement test that defeats the purpose of AP foreign language classes.
Biology AP was by far my best AP class credit wise, and I don't think LSU offers a Biology placement test.
English AP is probably a decent boost. But if you can score a 4/5 on the AP exam, then you probably have a high enough ACT score to skip.
Of course these days, most "elite" high schools offer a ton of dual-enrollment courses, especially with so many being taught online.

So you don’t pay for dual enrollment?
I am looking into it for my older son, my daughter tested out a bunch of stuff and I knew she would so I didn’t place her in dual enrollment
