What do high school AP classes do?

Never took them, still graduated from college. If high schools can offer this, why isn't education overhauled to provide this level to all students? How do AP classes work vs regular when taught by the same teacher? A bit more challenging? Why not challenge all the same if we preach equality?

They just give you an arse ton of reading and writing for homework. It's meant to mimic college, but college was far easier than half my bullshite AP classes just due to the decreased homework/workload.
I do recommend taking AP classes though, simply because you don't know what quality of education you'll get out of the core class version. AP at least gives you a standard to follow for the end of year test.

there weren't any requirements for AP except pre-reqs at my HS. most kids would not do well

dude the one group of kids in schools that are held back by current education policies are your smart kids
curricula around the country are geared towards the middle-low tiers and smart kids are largely screwed

Better prepare you for college, give you a better weighted GPA to get into a better school and teach you more than the generic classes.

Mine basically ended up being equivalent to my first year of college.
Made all those classes a breeze cause everything was a repeat of what I had just done.

Some AP classes offer college credits. Some do not.

No one is preaching equality; they are preaching equity - There is a difference.
AP offers students who learn at a faster pace an environment with like minded students with similar abilities to do the same.

They keep your kid out of general population classes in public schools. Day and night environment difference.

When I was in school, AP classes meant you worked 3 times as hard and got nothing extra for the extra effort. I figured that out by my junior year and refused any more AP classes, so I could cruise to a great GPA while the supposedly smart valedictorian struggled all the way.
Currently, I understand that high school kids can earn college credit hours for AP classes, and if that had been the case in the mid-80s, I would have been in AP classes.

My dumbass took AP chemistry cause I liked chemistry. Didn't get no college credit. Had I taken AP Physics or AP Calculus though I could have gotten credit.

Well, this, and you can test out of having take entry level courses.
I went TO college with 18 hours already because of AP test and ACT scores. HUGE advantage. Gives you more schedule flexibility which is great. And my senior year I only had to take 3 classes my last semester (to keep TOPs.)

They're more challenging, and you also take the AP exam at the end of the year. If you make a 3 or above (5 is the highest score?), you get college credit hours and don't have to take those hours in college.
