The following is from a world renowned hospital and clinic:
There are 11 criteria denoting substance use disorder. If you suffer from 2 or 3 of them, you are considered to have a mild disorder; 4-5 criteria, a moderate disorder; and 6 or more, a severe disorder.
1. Drinking more alcohol than you meant to or for a longer period of time.
2. Telling yourself you will cut down or stop but failing to do so.
3. Investing a lot of your time in obtaining, drinking, and recovering from your drink of choice.
4. Cravings and urges to drink alcohol.
5. Failure to function at home, school, or work because of alcohol consumption.
6. Continued use in the face of disrupted personal relationships.
7. Putting alcohol consumption ahead of important social, occupational, or recreational activities.
8. Repeated consumption of alcohol despite recognizing the dangers it posed.
9. Continued drinking despite your knowledge of physical or psychological problems that are worsened with drinking alcohol.
10. Developing tolerance to your drink of choice.
11. Development of withdrawal symptoms that are relieved by drinking again.

You don't have to agree. Most people are in denial until its way too late. Usually people realize it when alcohol becomes more important than almost everything else.

Step 1 of AA is admitting that you are powerless over alcohol - that you can not turn it down when offered, it's part of your daily routine, you can't stop when you have that first, etc.

It's hard to set an absolute line with addiction. In AA, no one can tell you you're an alcoholic. You have to decide for yourself.

The main thing is continuing to drink despite ever increasing negative consequences from drinking.

quote:% of time you thought about drinking during that time? The obsession in the mind is one of the main determining factors to answer your original question.
Recently I went six weeks without drinking to prove a point. It was hard I admit but no problemo.

According to Alcoholics Anonymous—
If you can limit yourself to 1 drink, without problems, for 30 consecutive days, you might not be an alcoholic.

Most alcoholics lie about how much they drink.
If drinking has caused problems for your life— relationships, money, friends, jobs etc, but yet you continue to drink to get drunk, then that’s a problem.

Was summed up pretty well earlier in the thread, from the dictionary:
a chronic disorder characterized by dependence on alcohol, repeated excessive use of alcoholic beverages, the development of withdrawal symptoms on reducing or ceasing intake, morbidity that may include cirrhosis of the liver, and decreased ability to function socially and vocationally.
