If it starts to affect your personal/professional life (on a regular basis, not just I was hungover a couple of times going into work because who hasnt?) then that's where the line is imo.

The answer isnt how much....
If drinking causes you problems, you are a problem drinker.

What led you to bump this? I mean it isn't that old a thread but curious.
I'm on week 8 of current teetotal stint, and every time I do this I learn more about the things that suck about drinking. I'm not talking just about getting hammered all the time.
It's hard to see all the little ways even moderate (a relative term, for sure) drinking affects your life without stepping back.
For me it's a lot about sleep. Dealing with a 1 year old (at age 45). Dealing with stress. Anxiety. I think it gets more subtle and yet more multifaceted as we age.
In school and even through most of my 30s it was just hangover prevention and management and not screwing up work and still getting in exercise and enjoying outdoors. Now it seems to affect everything even in small quantities.

When your priorities in life are:
1. Alcohol
2. Other

Will you go to a social event/ Wedding reception if you know there will be no alcohol available? Avoiding events with no alcohol availability seems to be one of the indicators you have a problem with alcohol.
