Do you ask people if you’re a bullfrog?

And why is that?

If you have to ask, you know the answer.
But I appreciate your effort in fighting it. I did the exact same.

re: What constitutes being an alcoholic or drunkard
I always defined an alcoholic as someone who can't control their desires. Someone who has to hide it because it's not an appropriate time to consume or that can't stop when they should (i.e. they have to drive home or watch after their children). I drink a whiskey or a couple beers 5-6 nights a week, but I don't have to. I don't let the thought of 'when' control my thoughts. I honestly really enjoy the taste and the way it takes the edge off. If I go to a wedding or some other social gathering, I can stop at any time if I feel I've had too much. I might be wrong in my definition, and I certainly don't want to dumb it down for those suffering, because I understand it is definitely a real disorder that many people have. Many people in my family in fact.

Meh. Slippery slope. You can drink three times a year and be an alcoholic.. it all depends on what happens when you drink those three times.

For a general rule, if alcohol is getting first place treatment over family, desires, goals, God, rest, or health and you have that feeling of selfishness, you might have a problem.

If you don’t think you’re an alcoholic, just quit drinking all together.
Can you? Do you want to?
Those are important questions

re: What constitutes being an alcoholic or drunkard
I have at least 2 cocktails every night after dinner and don't think anything of it. I've not been stumble-bum drunk in ages, have given it up yearly for Lent with no ill effects or crazy urges to drink while taking the break.

Have I had a buzz, sure, but never to the point I'm rude to people, couldn't carry on a civil conversation or not function like a normal human being.

Drinking every day doesn’t make you an alcoholic. I have some close friends that do it and they’re normal drinkers.

It's like anything else. If it interferes with your relationships or your work, if you're spending money you can't afford on booze and not paying your bills, etc, you have a problem.

Started out drinking at a young age. Started drinking at home by myself. Been doing that for 30 years. First a few, then a 6 pack, then a 6 pack IPA. Started gaining weight so when to vodka. Then to bourbon.

Long story short ended up 15 oz bourbon every effin night.

It creeps up on you.

Now on doctor supervised withdrawals with meds. day day 9 no alcohol

That's exactly how I think of myself. I've been around enough alcoholics in my life to know what one is.

I have a brother-in-law, now in AA for the past 4 years, that started his day with a cup of coffee than carried the cup around topped off with whiskey until around noon like nobody noticed. Then he'd switch off to beer and in the evening, back to whiskey. It ruled his life.

By this logic every one that likes to drink is an alcoholic and I don't believe that. I'm asking because there has to be a line drawn somewhere

I only label people alcoholics when they either can't hold down a job because they go to work after drinking, or their family is financially strapped because they drink all the money away. A six pack a day and a 5th on the weekends doesn't make you a alcoholic if you are not tipsy at work and you can afford it. The proof is in the pudding to me.

what?

Not everyone that drinks asks if they’re an alcoholic.

One can be a “fully functioning alcoholic.”
It would never show on the outside.
But it can sure as hell shows on the inside. In your mind is where the damage is done and it usually spills out onto other facets of your life.

re: What constitutes being an alcoholic or drunkard
When drinking causes a problem in your life and you continue to do it like poor job performance, legal troubles, not being yourself due to hangovers or loss of a relationship. A normal drinker would say to themselves "damn, I should slow down or stop drinking for a bit," while an alcoholic will just continue on

Obviously the withdrawals as well but at that point you're already fricked

Until it does, I keep the term "alcoholic" in my pocket. Inside damage doesn't concern me because there are several things that do that to us eg. bad food, smoking, dust, noise, stress.
I have no problems with a "fully functioning alcoholic", its none of my business and IMO does not need intervention. Now that doesn't mean I would want to marry that person.
Plenty of poor decisions keep people stalled out in life, but until they start going in reverse, I will hold my judgement.

re: What constitutes being an alcoholic or drunkard
B/c of family history of multiple generations of alcoholics, I'm like 4 times more likely to be an alcoholic. And I could feel like I would lose control and act like a moron when I drank in college and the couple years after, so I just gave it up in my mid-20s.

Alcoholics have no control.
