Can you give an example of this marketing?

Cause I’ve never seen anything remotely like this.

According to science, I am at low-risk for alcoholism because I consume four or fewer beers per day. And I tend to only drink on the weekends, but there are exceptions depending upon circumstance. That being said, there are times when I think that I need to cut back after consuming three or four beers in a single night. It's all about how you feel about your drinking IMHO, especially when you don't really drink as much.

I drank a lot from my mid-teens to my early forties but I've slowed down in a big big way in recent years. No conscious decision or big moment of clarity, just sort of lost the taste for it. It caused me problems more than once or twice but I never came close to bottoming out. There are functioning alcoholics/drunks. The idea that every hard drinker ends up in the gutter is pure marketing propaganda from the rehab industry.

Describes my situation to a tee. Add in some medical issues on top of it all and I just don’t consume near what I used to. As to the OP, I know a few functioning alcoholics and each has their own distinct traits. One had such dire health issues that it was beginning to cause serious bouts of pancreatitis, reduction in bone mass and just general lack of any stamina. Another has zero health issues but you definitely notice it causes issues.

All in all, I don’t think there is a black and white answer to the OP’s question. Each person’s situation is unique in its own way. And, I do agree, the rehab industry is somewhat out of control but many employers list it as the only option to remain gainfully employed.

When you often drink more than originally intended

When you consistently regret actions done while drinking

When your drinking affects personal relationships.

When your drinking consistently keeps you from being your best you (work, husband, person)

If any of the above are correct, then you have a problem with drinking.

Varies by person, but I think when you MUST have a drink, regardless of circumstance, is a sign of a potential problem.

I don’t drink unless I’m by myself or with somebody so I don’t think I are one.

Alcoholics drink a lot, but they go to meetings.

Drunkards just drink a lot.

Alcohol becoming a problem in your life, relationships, family, work, leagal problems. I'm sure that's already been said just haven't read the thread. I'm an alcoholic, for whatever reason when I get drunk or buzzed I wanna drive around and throw beer bottles at cop cars...always have. So it took me a long time before I just had to give it up.

When you start doing stupid stuff like this:

LINK

Have you ever got so drunk you sat around feeling like a fool all the next day ?

One of my best friends had confided in me that his wife cheated on him, last night I was texting him drunk telling him what a sorry whore she is.

Found out this morning it was her, he was asleep and she had his phone. They are both extremely pissed off at me now.

To be fair, how would he have known this sober?

the way he/she acts when drunk is the only way to judge an alcoholic.

what if the doc says that their liver is fine and they don't act ridiculous? in fact, they are more fun to be around while drinking.

Can you stop drinking and proceed with a normal life or do you have to drink to get through the day?

At home and not in public. This is most alcoholics.

Plus if you have to start a thread questioning your alcoholism, you're probably an alcoholic
