According to 1943 fashion, BLACK boots go with charcoal gray suits.
Of course, I trust you aren't wearing one of these.

Yes, oxford. Almost went chelsea but decided against it.
They will look great with a suit. If you want to be more versatile with them I would say one of the deep reds vs black since they work well with higher levels of business casual. If you want that versatility I would avoid the really deep reds that look black in a lot of lighting situations. They are fine with business wear and usually will be in bright lighting so they present as red but if you want to wear them out in the evening they tend to look black and look a little out of place.

Blame it all on my roots
I showed up in boots
And ruined your black-tie affair
The last one to know
The last one to show
I was the last one you thought you'd see there
And I saw the surprise
And the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of champagne
And I toasted you
Said "honey, we may be through"
But you'll never hear me complain

He is not a clown. A proper dress boot (not cowboy and not work but a proper dress boot) is perfectly fine and actually stylish with a suit.

You don't have a female in your life you can ask?

Boots are certainly cool with a suit. I have read in a few places that high-polish black chelsea boots are acceptable for black tie.
Also depends on the event/venue. If it's law firm in Texas, you are just fine wearing boots with a suit. If it's a ball in Washington DC, maybe not.

Unless you are wearing a Nudie suit, boots do not go with suits.

I am surprised at the number of people unaware of dress boots. I can't imagine someone wearing a John Lobb Chelsea boot and a Nudie suit.
