Nutra-source seafood select. All vets who sale science diet recommend it. Way better foods out there for the same price. If you are in Baton Rouge go to Jefferson feed either on highland/airline or Seimens/Perkins. They can steer you where you need to go with regards to your breed and what you want out of the food.

I was feeding Acana, but tried the nutra-source and I'm getting very similar results for $50 a bag instead of almost $85. This was at the recommendation of those guys.

Well, dogs with food allergies are usually reacting to the meat sources in foods. The restrospective reviews on dog food allergies that go back several decades have always listed the more common meat sources as the most common allergens - chicken, beef being up there at the top. The grains have been listed but always at the bottom/least common. I suspect that this has/is changing a little as agricultural economy of this country changes (and thus what goes in the food).

When someone tells me the itching resolves with a diet change to grain free I've wondered if this is b/c many of the grain free foods often contain novel proteins (like duck or venison) and the grain was never an issue. I'm confident both are happening but I guess we won[t know for many years.

Interesting. It could have been the meat. Like I said, she only had all chicken once, so I might have noticed it didn't go away if I had stuck with it. I'll stick to the duck or other less common meats to be safe. Appreciate the insight.

NutriSource Heartland Select Bison (grain free).

My friend who is an animal dermatologist said the grain-free thing is not really what usually helps....changing proteins makes more of a difference.

Truth is vet med is just so far behind human med in food allergies we don't know for sure what exactly they're reacting to in the meats.

In humans, for instance, a big player in chicken allergies is chicken serum albumin - a protein in chickens. They know a person reactive to this will react to albumin of most any bird b/c of cross reactivity. And they know exactly what weight (in daltons) a molecule has to be for a human to react to it (meaning they could consume food that's been broken down to a specific weight). We aren't even really that close on this stuff and just left with "uhh, it's chicken allergy."

Kind of off topic but have any of you who have pets with allergies ever had them tested? My vet mentioned it as an option but I don't know if it would be worth it or more of a money maker without benefits. My Golden has horrible allergies so i would spend the money if its beneficial.

Don't waste your money doing a blood test for food allergies. Since these tests first came out every study done on them has shown them to be worthless. Not a single company producing them has been able to show that they have anything reasonably close to high specificity.

Testing for enironemntal allergens can be helpful but really only if you're going to do allergy shots for the dog. This would be best done through a dermatologist, imo. You can find one at LSU for sure.

Royal Canin and Blackwood(for all stages of life).

Blackwood is especially good for dogs with sensitive skin and stomach. I also give my Doberman 3 teaspoons (with food) of The Missing Link (supplement for skin).

All products are ordered from Chewy.

Hill's prescription and absolutely no table scraps. My dogs haven't had diarrhea since they've been on it, and it has almost been a year.

Usually around $45 on Amazon. Used to feed him Science Diet advanced fitness but all the grain in it started making him chunky. Switched over about 6 months ago and he has lost the weight. Dude had gas for about a week that would make my eyes water after switching though.

Purina Pro Plan Chicken and rice. Little man can't keep down the lamb and rice formula for some reason.

Fromm.

Company out of Wisconsin. Dogs love it...GSP/Lab cross hasn't had near the issues with her stomach. I love that...not having to clean up puke.

My spaniel eats Fromm grain free. It's the only way to keep her skin and ears infection free. I tried science diet, but it gave her bad ear infections and seborrhea. Now that she's back on Fromm, that has cleared up.
