Any job you can get with the company is going to be a step up from contracting. If it's working for the plant, its probably worth taking.
That said, the plants themselves are all about the same IMO. If you just accept the rules and culture for what they are and go with the flow, you'll likely work a lot of hours and make a lot of money.

CF would be top of my list. Shell Geismar is very nice but it’s like living in California. SNF small and laid back, similar to Grace. Wouldn’t touch BASF or Shintec personally. Go to Westlake Geismar if you want to get underpaid and live dangerously.

Heard nothing but good things about Grace. Lack of comparable pay and benefits in the area is only drawback.

Do you mean for the plant, or at the plant? Very different things.
After that, you need to specify what kind of job; ops, maintenance, specialty gigs, etc.

I don't work at Methanex. A good friend of mine works at Koch in St. James and says often times people leave there to go to Methanex and then try and get back to Koch. So take that for what it's worth.

Pay for operations is mostly similar among local plants. Some places pay DOE and others have a defined progression. Stability can come into play if you're at a union represented site. There's a lot of variables to consider.

Agree 100 percent. Worked as a operator for a company for 7 years in the panhandle of Texas. Closed the refinery and wanted me to relocate to Oklahoma. Loved the company and my coworkers. Decided not to go to Oklahoma hired in for Westlake chemical on hwy 108. Oh hell no Petro 2. Freaking have hated the last three years of my life

Worked as a contractor in pretty all the gulf coast plants once or twice. Starting around Lake Charles, I liked both Westlakes. Citgo was ok. Indorama is a sh*t hole. Sasol was ok, but safety was super strict. Never ended up at Hackberry. I didnt care for Exxon Baton Rouge. BASF, Rubicon, Methanax, and Shell Geismar weren't bad, other than Shell is only about a month every year. I loved going to CF Donaldsonville. Hated when Shell Convent closed. Hated Marathon. Shell Narco is older, but ok. Cornerstone was cool.
I'm sure I missed a few. I gave it all up about 5 years ago and took a chemical operator job at home. But I'd go back to it if I had to. Kind of miss the chase.

depends on what you do
for example, some of the refineries pay engineers very well but they expect 60+ hours a week. so its a trade off and you have to decide what kind of work life balance you want
most places in plaquemine are hard to fill to some extent because people do not want to live on that side of the river and the commute can be brutal from South BR, AP etc
as far as what plants...honestly the LNG plants are going to be the best bang for the buck but again in the middle of no where so commute can be an issue.

Ops don't even write permits in some now. They've switched to Epermits where the planners draft the permits. All ops do is verify them and field walk with the contractors before issuing.

Plants in that area have trouble hiring strictly because crossing the river is a nightmare.
