I’m thinking the op is remembering a sports rivalry from years ago that I also heard. I think it was a broadcast caught on a movie filming even.
Derry vs Dublin or something. And so the Isle of Man converted to Derry as a boastful claim of superiority.
But yeah, technically you’re right with IoM and Londonderry.

People's inability to pluralize the word "text" infuriated me. Lots of other words ending in -ct, -st, and -xt, for that matter.
