Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering at LSU is one of the top in the United States

it's ranked in about the middle of two dozen or so petro schools. it's not a very common degree.

i'd be suprised if lsu ever had anything inside the top50, maybe chemical. it might not even be a top100 engineering school overall.

uf has a top40 overall engineering program.

Whatever you do, don’t advise him to go to Georgia tech. Those kids are so weird. A&M kids are kinda weird too, but a lot more tolerable. So I’d recommend that

first thing is to decide what engineer.
then decide because different schools have different relationships with employment providers.....

i can not stress this enough....

look hard at placement centers......

If chemical do LSU so he can intern at the plants during the summer.

Everything else doesn't really matter. Engineering (excluding structures) isn't like Harvard vs Yale Law. Go frugal and the opportunities will be available regardless of the school.

If he wants out of Louisiana and degree in the order you described it is texas am....
I live in katy and tons of friends with kids at Texas schools.....

Aggies are nice individually but when a crowd a little much.....I can not say anything nice about college station but a college kid will find enough college kid fun....just will not want to be there as an adult.

All cards on the table::: I recruited at am for our company ....I really dislike them from a fan point of view..... but they are an excellent engineering school....and more importantly have a very very good placement program and Texas has much more career opportunities than Louisiana.

It hurts to say that!!!! As I love lsu and Louisiana but texas is a well run state and an a solid university for academics your interested in....they have decent space eng also...(specifically rotation)...and we have the commercial space ports in Texas and Texas/New Mexico border

Btw had kids attend: lsu,Texas tech, ut Austin ,texas am, university of chicago

You don’t go to the best engineering school you can for undergrad. That doesn’t make any sense, graduate with a high gpa from any SEC school and your options are all open.

You should consider the cost and finally where you want to live and what job you want. If you want O&G then Tamu or lsu are far and away the best due to location. If you want to work in Atl, somewhere close to there, etc. Go to school thats geographically closest to your potential employers is the easiest way to get internships, co-ops, make contacts with alumni, and get a job. It’s not the only way, but definitely the easiest.

Only the undergrads are ABET accredited.

I think technically smart kids should study a hard science. If you don’t want to get a PhD then go into an engineering...it’s just more interesting that way. Engineering is DRY.

pretty soon ask what his grades are.

is he already serious student?

how is his math?

who is paying?

the north is chockful of elite engineering schools.

texas a&m is the best sec.

as pointed out vandy, depending on exact major.

have consideration about employment.
mech eng and ee you see lots of small biz.
chem eng you are probably cog in giant multinational. pay but different life.

Has one of the best nuclear engineering programs in the country. We have 3 in the SEC of usually rated in or around the top 10 nuke engineering programs in the country with UT, Florida, and TAMU.

I hate using US News, but I'm going to use it here just because...

Georgia Tech is ranked as the #17 engineering school in the world and 4th in the US behind MIT, Cal Tech, and Stanford.

Here's an alternative to USNWR rankings. I've seen this site referenced in other places; it's not based in the USA and includes schools around the world. I'm good with GT being 9th in the world in engineering/technology.
