My father's side traces back to Lyon, France. Then through Acadie, then to south La.
My father spoke only French at first, then English in school. Before you stereotype too much, he also has a degree from LSU.
Common ancestor is Joseph "Beausoleil" Broussard, common to alot of descendants of The Grande Deraingement.
Everyone has some Broussard in them, almost.
The old joke is that way back when everybody got 40 acres and a mule, you also got 2 Broussards
Mother's lineage is from Sicily through Ellis Island.

From the Northshore and been living out of state for almost 6 years. Most people I meet have a common misunderstanding that South Louisiana=Cajun. I have explained 100s of times that South Louisiana is very different than the rest of the US but South Louisiana is also broken up into very different regions and not everyone is Cajun. They usually get confused and just go back to calling me a Cajun.

My maw-maw was a Broussard and descended from one of his brothers. It’s funny when you research the family, or the other Acadian families—they all had about 10 to 12 kids apiece and then those kids turned around and had just that many of their own kids, and so on down the line until the Great Depression.

Why would anyone be proud of being Cajun. I’m Cajun and I hate it. I feel trashy

Not all, but many of the Cajuns, about 1,500 people, arrived in South Louisiana in 1785 on 7 ships paid for by Spain.
My paternal side arrived in Louisiana from Acadie in 1765. Settled on the river in St James.

My grandpa was the same, and he retired at 50. He was a Landry.

I get called Cajun all the time but don’t claim to be and am not Cajun. Just a ubiquitous term used in the northeast for people from LA.
One time I responded “I’m closer to coonass than I am Cajun” and the person got super awkward. It was pretty amazing.

I thought I was an outsider to all the cajun kids in school back then. It turns out I was an outsider but because I am more cajun than most of them.
One quick way to tell is to look up the manifests of the ships that carried them to Louisiana. A good beginning to find some of the last names.

I'd much rather enjoy my crawfish, but you do you, Chestnut.

I'm half French and from South Louisiana but not Cajun. My father's family moved to Louisiana in the 1920s. My mother's family is from Missouri.
My in laws in Alabama thought I'd have a Cajun accent the first time they met me.

Do you believe in the nobility of suicide?

Both of my parents only learned English when they had to go to school, and both were born and raised in Abbeville. I’m as full blooded as you can be, and I’m still not Cajun. I grew up in Alexandria, and though I may be a redass, I never learned a lick of Cajun French. If you can’t speak the language, you’re not Cajun.

This doesn’t make sense
Someone could learn Cajun French and have zero Acadian ancestors and you would consider them Cajun?
