Not all, but many of the Cajuns, about 1,500 people, arrived in South Louisiana in 1785 on 7 ships paid for by Spain.

If you’re referring only to those people whose ancestors came here from Nova Scotia during Le Grande Derangement, you are right, those are technically the only “true” Cajuns.

But Cajuns themselves have a saying: “By the blood, by the ring, or by the back door”.

Not one Cajun ancestor in the family, just French.

So no males in your lineage married a Cajun woman? I thought I just had French in me but it turns out the men in my family like Cajun women.

Keep tracing it back and you will find the original Acadians/Cajuns/Coonasses etc were from Alsace-Lorraine, a disputed region in the northeastern border of France/southwestern Germany.

After they were “eased” out, there was much cross breeding with the Spanish, etc. en route to Nova Scotia. Then they were kicked out of Canada and landed in Maine, Maryland, Mobile and southern Louisiana’s bayou country and south central plains.

Now after, winning the CFP title, the SEC wants to kick us out. We’re pretty much mongrels.

The baws/bawettes I came from were from Brittany. Nantes specifically.

My roots go down Bayou Dularge, Bayou Terrebonne, Bayou Pointe Aux Chene, and Bayou Lafourche. 90% of my ancestors arrived on a boat from Nova Scotia, I’m pretty sure I’m Cajun.

I'm pretty sure I have 0% Cajun. A little Cherokee and some German and English. My wife though is pretty damn Cajun. Family is in Gibson and Schriever and Morgan City. Duval and Authement surnames.

Look at the last names on the passenger list. Safe to say there are a TON of people around here with Acadian descendants.
