The U.S. Military Academy at West Point is finally getting a statue of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, one of its most famous graduates, who led the Union to victory in the Civil War.

It will be unveiled Thursday by the 18th president's great-great grandson, Ulysses Grant Dietz, an art curator at the Newark Museum in New Jersey. The statue, by sculptor Paula Slater, presents a hatless Grant in his four-star general's uniform.

quote:

The unveiling marks the sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary, of Grant's inauguration as the 18th president. He served two turbulent terms during the "Reconstruction" era, West Point said in a news release.

Statues of three other generals and West Point graduates -- Dwight Eisenhower (class of 1915), Douglas MacArthur (1903) and George Patton (1909) -- are already in place on the academy's grounds, but plans for one of Grant did not get underway until the House Armed Services Committee recommended it to the Army in 2016, according to the release.

Soviet generals 80 years later studied Ulysses S. Grant's strategy of using soldiers as fodder to simply overwhelm the enemy.

Dude didn't care how many lives the battles cost.

He owned one slave that he either bought or was given to him. The man's name was William Jones. When he needed money, instead of selling Jones, he set him free.

shite like this is just boogey man stories made up by people’s grand parents who still thought the south would “rise again”

Yes he lost a lot of soldiers because

A. A TON of his soldiers were brand new barely trained troops

B. He fought at Shiloh and The Wilderness campaign, 2 of the worst places as far as numbers of troops lost for both sides.

His troop percentages lost were actually better than his Southern adversaries

So this "hero" did in fact use his white privilege to profit from systemic racism and exploit the slave labor of a person of color.

TEAR IT DOWN

I would hope he would fair better in percentages lost when you win with a larger number of troops.
