And about the civilians in Vicksburg he bombed and killed to get the south to capitulate?

Grant and Lincoln and everyone of their ilk, who thought the way to “save” a county was to send 600k to their deaths and complete destroy an entire region of “their” country, will never be viewed as the good guys by me. History can paint them with a beautiful brush because they won and I understand that.

I think it says a lot that he doesn't ALREADY have a statue there.

Had many relatives who fought for the South. The pro South posts and the hatred towards Grant/Lincoln on this board is just dumb. Let it go. War was inevitable after secession and war is hell.

There is nothing to let go. The Confederacy certainly wasn’t the good side either. My stance is the leaders of the United States did not have to initiate war on the CSA and they certainly did not need to destroy the south to the point that it never truly recovered. You don’t claim that you want to save a country and then destroy it economically and socially. That’s lunacy. Over 600k dead. For what? So systemic racism, economic devastation, and hatred towards both sides could last for another 150 years.

Pemberton should have surrendered Vicksburg immediately.

Dude didn't care how many lives the battles cost.
It worked in both cases though. Both were very similar situations where the North and Soviets had way more people and supplies but poor leadership and weren’t great fighters whereas the opponents (confederates and Nazi Germany) had fewer people to spare but great military leadership.

He was set free in 1859.

They should have taken the money used to buy the statue and put it into a restoration and preservation fund for his tomb, an hour downriver from West Point.

Well maybe if that region hadn't based their entire economy on slave labor, and the inbreds hadn't been willing to die to preserve their right to own other humans then just maybe Lincoln wouldn't have had to send Grant and Sherman and their "ilk" to burn down that regions inbred cities. Ever think of that?

I have a new found respect for General Grant in that he was the first Union General to fully bring to bear his single greatest advantage over the South... the sheer size and inexhaustible supplies of the Union army.
But don't make it out to be that he was some type of strategic genius. Whereas his predecessors would retreat to Washington after a tough fight to lick their wounds, his single standing order was to grab the Confederate army by the belt buckle and never let go... to allow the sheer weight of his army to crush the South. And he lost a SH*T-LOAD of soldiers in the process.
The fact that he lost a smaller "percentage" of men merely means his army was friggin' HUGE compared to the Confederate army!

Uh, no.
Grant got William Jones in 1857-58 and set him free in 1859. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863.

Yeah...this isn't what he wanted to do at all. Grant's whole objective in Virginia was to have the Army of the Potomac get behind Lee and force Lee to attack it. Problem was...the Army of the Potomac was slow on the march due to its size. Lee's smaller army could move faster and check its movements.
Grant was also very hands off at the beginning of the campaign, allowing Meade and his staff a great deal of latitude when it came to tactical decisions. After all, Grant was the General-in-Chief of all Union armies while Meade was the commanding general of the Army of the Potomac.

i guess we shouldn't honor the military for WW2 because we had to bomb civilians to get Germany and japan to capitulate
