Seems like it would be pretty easy, especially bag in the day

Yes they were. I don't know about now. Know several guys that did time for it.

I don't know but some of my LEO friends used to tell stories about the bags of drugs they would find while patrolling remote coastal shores. I'm sure some of those were bags were intended for the boats.

Yes. I know some US Customs guys down there that run patrols. But not that often and not as their regular business. Someone doing that would stand out too much in the community and would be caught in short order.

Per the Customs guys, it is more of an occasional thing for the fisherman that they do for a quick buck when they need some money. Not to mention, their boat gets seized if caught so the risk - reward is substantial.

They told me they have even gotten calls from guys who found bales floating after a real smuggler dumped them and they had them drop them off at their office dock. Not exactly arch criminal behavior to turn in someone elses load.

Of course shrimp boats were used. Drugs have been washing up since the 1970 ‘s.

Is the DEA so desperate that they're turning to the OT for some inside tips?

This

I knew a DEA guy that worked out of that old marina by HWY 90 Rigolets bridge, back in the day. I remember him talking about bales floating in Biloxi Marsh.

There’s a bar on the Jupiter(FL) inlet named that, it’s where “it’s five o’clock somewhere “ was filmed, used to go there a lot when I lived there, wouldn’t surprise me if that’s where the funding came from

What are Customs guys doing around shrimp boats? And, I cannot believe shrimp and oyster boat guys have completely fooled the US government. Drugs are for life. It’s not an occasional thing with Columbians or Mexicans. You keep doing it or you disappear. Nobody ever retires from that type of drug running unless they get popped and come out clean after doing time.

US Customs patrols the coast which brings them into proximity to people who work around the coast. Like shrimp and oyster boats for instance. If they catch these guys smuggling on occasion then it would stand to reason they haven't "completely fooled the US government." It's up to you to guess how they know when a boat is holding shrimp and when a boat is holding a load of drugs.

The OP was asking about smuggling by shrimp and oyster guys who otherwise run a legitimate business. They are the ones who do it occasionally. It is obvious that professional smugglers and cartel types do it all the time. Read the original post again.

Not necessarily.

If you don’t lose any loads you can quit when you want.

You lose a load you owe them for the load and you have to keep smuggling til you paid the debt. That is when they own you.

Doing time does not excuse you from the debt.

There used to be a guy who owned some rental properties in Hackberry. He told us some of his history but the old man and I were convinced there was a wee bit more to his story. He was retired LE at the fed level so we figured he was making a few extra bucks in his retirement check for keeping an eye out for this type of activity. He died several years ago so no worries now, bring on the contraband
