Then what the frick is actually about? Are you surprised people want gifts for their wedding? Did you not get anything for yours (or have everything in the world already) and are now pissing and moaning like a child that others don't feel the same way?

yeah, I have TigerNic...its called not asking for a handout to pay for a honeymoon from everyone that attends your wedding and wedding showers.
Posted on 12/12/15 at 9:26 pm to joeleblanc
You were going to spend money anyway. Well maybe not you because you are a terrible person.

I'm not from Louisiana, and when my wife told me about it I didn't want to do it because I felt like it was begging for money.
The money dance is the best thing ever. A lot of people didn't buy gifts, they just had money for the money dance which was A OK in my book.

I've given cash for the last few weddings in the northeast. I think it's more of a southern thing to give an actual gift.
Now it wasn't to directly find a honeymoon it was more to pay for my dinner and drinks.

I'm not pissing and moaning at all. But I do think its a bit much to put the name of the travel agent as the only thing they want for a gift.
Sorry if your not capable to see just how uncouth that is. It seems to be the norm for a millennial based on the amount of comments in favor of it.
I honestly almost feel sorry for this generation as I posted earlier..

I'm sorry that you cannot fathom that a gift is simply you generously giving something that costs money to someone else. These people decided they wanted that gift to be money towards a honeymoon instead of a pot from Bed Bath and Beyond. Either way it's money coming out of your pocket in whatever dollar amount YOU choose.
Seriously, if it's that big of deal I'd just stay home. That many millennials in one place may cause you to be more irritable than you currently are.

Hate to break it to you joe but myself and several other posters I know in here are not millennials. We're just reasonable people.
But I understand. At least half of boomers aren't prepared for retirement. You need that money for yourself. I don't fault you. It wasn't your fault your parents generation overpopulated the world and as a result social systems will be strained and likely collapse.

Remember that OT thread where the grown man slowly unraveled because traditional wedding decorum was not being properly upheld, and then irrationally turned it into a generational indictment of millenial values?
It's like I went to the OT and ended up on the freaking Bravo network. This is some Real House Husbands of OT County stuff here, fellas.

My fiancé and I have lived together for 3 years. We already have everything we need. We have a dog together for fricks sake. The last thing I need is a damn gravy boat.

You keep using that word, but you must not know what it means.
We get it and understand your position as a cheap, grumpy old man. Don't try to blame this on generational differences either because I'm no millenial and neither are others disagreeing with you.

Is this thread still on track? If so, god damn Joe, you are an out of touch douchecanoe. If not, god damn Joe, you are an out of touch douchecanoe.

No. Your generation inherited unlimited possibility and, through greed and hubris, has essentially destroyed what once made this country great. Moreover, your own generation raised the very generations after you that you so frequently insult. You and your fellow shitboomers have no one to blame for the problems you perceive in this world but your own selfish, stupid selves.
Your generation is everything that is wrong with this country. Taken from Urbandictionary, because I couldn't have said it better myself:
quote:
Shitboomer (noun)
Refers to the generation of leeches born during the demographic Post-World War II baby boom between the years 1946 and 1964. A generation of draft dodgers who advocated peace, love and happiness and then grew up to wage deadly, never-ending wars in the middle east and abroad. A generation that has shackled their children with a burden of debt that resulted from their own greed and sense of entitlement.

I'm gonna be completely honest. Me and the wife preferred the gift cards the most. We used those things for two years.
This. That way after living together for a few months and you realized you needed something you could go pick it up.
But to OP sorry you seem like such an angry person but it's pretty simple. Times change. To you this may seem ridiculous but it Just is what it is. But you can take the old man approach and bitch and complain about the youths of today.
Was just in a wedding for a buddy of mine from college. Him and his wife had lived together for 5 years before getting married. They owned any of the common wedding registry items that they would need. So they asked for donations for their honeymoon. I don't know a single person that viewed it as some monstrosity of an event like you're making it seem. That being said my wife and I didn't donate to the honeymoon we got them a gift instead. And they loved it and were very grateful.
You say they should take a honeymoon they can afford. Well then other couples that make a registry shouldn't request China and different items. They should just purchase what they can afford.
Moral of story is times have changed. Why be so bitter and angry about how a couple has decided to request for gifts.

I'm somewhere in the middle on all this.
First off, I completely understand the shite in society where so many individuals get married later after already starting their accumulation of household items. In that sense of the word I absolutely agree that most traditional gifts are simply about getting a nicer or fancier version of what you already have which doesn't seem right.
So from that standpoint, giving cash or something for a trip makes more sense. Like some mentioned, most have already paid for the trip and these are add-ons like scuba diving outings or couples massages. They're going regardless, but if you want to upgrade their trip instead of giving them a butter knife, go for it!
The problem, however, becomes where does it stop? Everyone is so specific these days and so focused on what exactly THEY want. Gifts should be about what people think you want based off yal's relationship. I understand registries help reduce reducencies, but they also make gift-giving feel oddly impersonal IMO. Everyone in my family tells each other exactly what we want every Xmas except for my brother. He's the only one who gives people gifts every year based off what he thinks they'll like. Sometimes he misses, sure, and I always like what I get from everyone else because I chose it, but sometimes he also nails it and it's awesome.
I think a lot of this is the result of people being so focused on exactly what they want these days and also the explosion in size of weddings and amount of showers / parties leading up to them. People nowadays invite a thousand people to their weddings and have 3 showers and it's to the point where there's so many people and so many parties people don't know what to give you so you have to tell them. Something about it just really doesn't feel right. Fortunately I've never been to the fringe weddings so far, only really close friends. Because of that I never use the registry. I always get them something I feel they'd like based off our relationship. The registry always felt horribly impersonal.
Just my opinion. I completely understand that the amount of money is the same whether it's a gift or a trip, but I do think it's all part of a larger problem that doesn't feel right.

You're an idiot. Just take the $50 or $100 or however much you were going to spend for their gift and give it to them with a well-wishing card. Done. Don't have to look up a registry or go shopping or any of that nonsense.
For them, helping pay for the honeymoon is probably far more helpful than any pots and pans you could give them. Most couple today have to pay for the wedding, reception, and the honeymoon. Back in your day, the brides parents paid for part of it and the grooms parents paid for part of it. But most couples are older on average now, and already have all the kitchenware they need. The money is far more useful to these people, and good for them for finding the courage to ask for it
