Sorry for the diagnosis. Cancer sucks. I lost several family members to cancer. I’ll say a prayer for you bud. Hang in there and keep fighting the fight. Wishing you the best.

EWG's Guide to Sunscreens

The trouble with ingredients in sunscreen

quote:

There’s good reason to question what’s in a sunscreen and the possible health risks of its ingredients.

Companies that make and sell sunscreen ingredients and products should test them thoroughly for potential short- and long-term health effects. This includes tests for irritation and skin allergies. They should also test for skin absorption of ingredients and whether the ingredients could be linked to health effects like cancer, disrupt the hormone system or harm reproduction and development.

The Food and Drug Administration, which oversees sunscreen safety, said in 2019 and again in 2021 that, based on the available information, out of 16 ingredients it reviewed, only two – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide – are “generally recognized as safe and effective,” or GRASE.

Citing data showing safety issues, the FDA proposed that two rarely used sunscreen ingredients, 4-aminobenzoic acid (also known as, PABA) and trolamine salicylate, are not GRASE.

The FDA proposed that 12 other ingredients are not GRASE, primarily due to insufficient data rather than an affirmative finding that they are not safe: avobenzone, cinoxate, dioxybenzone, ensulizole, homosalate, meradimate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, padimate O and sulisobenzone. The agency has requested additional safety data on these ingredients, but they are still allowed for use in products sold in the U.S.

FDA studies show that with even a one time application of any of these ingredients – oxybenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, avobenzone and octinoxate – can be absorbed through the skin at levels above 0.5 nanograms per milliliter, the maximum concentration the FDA says may be found in blood without potential safety concerns.

My father, uncle, brother, and myself all had multiple rounds under the knife to remove pieces.

People who don’t wear sunscreen are like the people too cool to wear a seatbelt.

God bless and Goodluck in your process.

Can you just call and schedule one of these? Do you strip down and they look you over to find anything that might be suspicious? I don't know what I'm looking for but I spend/spent a lot of time running outside with no sunscreen so it's probably worth a check.

I go yearly. I call a schedule the mole check visit. Went this past summer. Stripped down to boxers. Went from my scalp to between my toes.

Don’t take chances with cancer. I am now 20 years post chemo for testicular cancer.

Did my colonoscopy at 45 need to go back at 55.

52 now and spent a ton amount of time in the sun. Baseball t-ball through high school and lots of softball in my 20s. and lived by the pool or beach.

Man, this makes my Sunday! Is your progress solely due to the immunotherapy?

Good luck. Terrible that it has already spread. Found mine going to my dermatologist for something on my face. She found it on my shoulder. It was in situ and removed, so I’m lucky.

Full body scans every 6 months from now until forever.

Sorry to hear this. Best of luck, man. You’ve got this. Going forward, think about researching chemicals in our sunscreens just getting baked into our pores. Also, being deficient in Vitamin D ain’t good and most of us are.

Best wishes in your treatment and thanks for the reminder. I'm 70 and active. Doc said he doesn't see anything, but advised at my age that a scan could be certain to give me some peace of mind or allow me to catch anything early.

I filled out the new patient paperwork two months ago but hadn't scheduled an appointment, yet, with the dermatologist.

Your message came in loud and clear. I just put in an alarm in my daily calendar for calling them tomorrow morning.

How much sunlight do you need to get vitamin D without getting skin cancer?

That's awesome news man.

I make sure to wear it if I'll be in the sun for extended periods. I've had 2 basalcell carcinomas cut off my face over the last few years.

The older you get, the less vitamin d you make from sunlight.
