Companies like Aleph Farms and Redefine Meat have developed 3D-printed beef, pork, and lamb products that are marketed as sustainable, animal-free alternatives. In 2023, Revo Foods launched the world’s first 3D-printed food product in supermarkets, a salmon-inspired filet, marking a milestone in commercial availability. Singapore remains the only country where 3D-printed cultivated meat is legally sold in grocery stores, following its 2020 approval.
3D-printed meat is considered a sustainable alternative to traditional livestock farming, with potential to reduce land use, water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy use. It also addresses ethical concerns related to animal welfare and supports efforts to meet rising global demand for protein in an environmentally responsible way. However, challenges remain, including high production costs—estimated at around $700 per kilogram in some cases—and limited scalability due to low throughput. While the technology is still emerging, it is gaining traction in select restaurants and specialty stores, with ongoing research focused on improving efficiency, taste, and consumer acceptance.
