South would've been weak. Didn't have economy to keep up nor a middle class. Slavery prevented the growth of middle and commercial classes in the south.

My ancestor was getting ready to defend New Orleans. Ended up getting a severe hernia (debilitating at that time), loading cannon balls during the battle.

What’s this “we”. None of us were living back then. And “we” all are citizens of the United States of America. The north beating the south and bringing them back into the union is why we are strong as we are today. Separate we are not the world power of today....

If you thought the Insurrection was about slavery, may I suggest getting off the google machine and readingThe Real Lincoln by Thomas DiLorenzo. Lincoln being a follower of Hamilton and Clay wanted a strong central government based on the British "Mercantilism" model.
The reason Jefferson Davis wasn't tried for treason was because according to the Constitution States could secede and if the courts found in Davis' favor that could have been a problem.
I don't know why that would have worried the Republicans since Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus and ignored the Constitution

So much nuance.

Yes, it would have been relatively weak for a generation. After that, I place my confidence in the resilience, the common sense, the common decency and the intelligence of the American Citizen to forge a nation-state that, by the year 2020, would have greater internal strength and unity than 2020 USA.
But, the USA and the CSA would have had a very symbiotic relationship, IMHO, because both countries would have benefited from the other, just as the separate regions of the North USA and South USA, benefit from one another.
Has the USA solved its race problem? Ask Mr. and Mrs. Drew Brees. In the CSA in 2020, IF there remained race problems, I feel certain that they would not be worse than 2020 USA's race problems.

2020 USA is the World Police. If 2020 USA were a really scary "World Power" then Red China would not have dared to launch a devastating Biological Attack on the USA.
There's a difference between being the World Police and a mighty World Military Power.
Now, is USA currently a World Economic Power? Yes. For the time being - yes.

WTF are you talking about? The CSA probably would have been devastated by the USA in WW1 and WW2 and a modern day CSA would have fricking awful race relations. It wouldn’t surprise me either if the black population had a communist rebellion at some point. The South is definitely better off being part of the United States

Slavery would have been abolished soon after the civil war. Over 140 countries abolished slavery peacefully. IF Lincoln had wanted to abolish slavery (which he didn't) he could have bought every slave in the south for a fraction of the cost of the War. Also 25% of the white male population between the ages of 25-45of the South wouldn't have been killed.

The USA would have invaded the CSA during WW1 and WW2? Your emotional ejaculation is incoherent, my friend. WTF are YOU talking about?
There's no need to hi-jack this thread any longer. We have moved from a topic of History into the realm of politics. This discussion of politics belongs on the PT board, not here.
But, thank you for your opinion.

Confederate scum got off easy. The US took their foot off the gas and showed mercy, more mercy than was deserved.

The south had high tariffs placed, 10 percent of the population ruled. Republicans came in and stole as much as they could.
