t will be better than Central. Central has become a total shite show in 10 years with the horrible politicians they keep electing.
Central has pretty highly rated schools.

I haven't been keeping up with this story too closely.
Do the BR people here that don't live within that proposed area support this, or is it only the people in that area?
Very good questions. Seems like a very complicated issue and situation that some on both sides want you to believe that it's simple situation/decision.
The numbers regarding the revenue needed to support a new government and school system seem to vary greatly depending on the source. Probably somewhere in the middle (or not?)
Revenue sources (city limits) are also up for debate and up for grabs. (Example: The Mall of LA)
The results are certainly unknown. It could be great for the folks of St. George, or could be a big flop, based on revenue, costs, leadership and many other challenges.
It could be good or bad for what's left of Baton Rouge. Many fear that losing the revenue/support of the southern part of the city/parish, BR will suffer and deteriorate, lowering the value of itself and everything near it.
If I was pushing for St. George, I'd be pushing how it's a Win-Win for both sides. (if it is) And maybe they are, but I haven't heard that part of the message.

They have a new spinoff now. Called "ONE BATON ROUGE".
They support north Baton Rouge splitting off and creating their own economic development district. But they are angry when an unincorporated part of EBR parish wants to set up a city of St. George.

I've been on here discussing the issue with people and some have genuine questions. I have no problems with those folks. An intelligent conversation about such issues is healthy.
But those who jump in to say we're breaking up the city, or we just a bunch of racists or how dare people to want change; just doesn't cut it.

I’m not necessarily opposed to it and I signed the petition this time as I believe the people deserve the opportunity to vote on it. But I’m not necessarily decided on how I would vote.
I understand the reasons to break away but I am hardly convinced by the so called leadership of St George that they know what they are doing and the numbers presented are correct. They need to be transparent and present a comprehensive plan showing exactly what they are trying to do and how this will be done. Including total cost even if it means increasing taxes and I don’t think coming out and saying a tax increase might be necessary would be detrimental.
All of my friends and neighbors in the boundary have the same concern and we are a significant source of tax revenue. We don’t vote based on fear. I know BR politics is bad and full of crooks. What will convince me St George won’t be any different?

Here is what I'm seeing, decades of corruption, ineptitude and waste are so integrated into the system now; it would be hard for me to understand how SG could be worse.
And look what we are talking about. We aren't changing how garbage IX collected, how we get utilities and sewer services. The park system, the library system, police protection, and fire protection will all stay the same. The GL plan and road maintenance in that plan remains the same. Right?
What will change is what happens with that 2% sales tax the parish collects. The 2% that disappears into the general fund and we don't know where it goes. It's about 50-55 million dollars a year.
The debate over a city needs to focus on what do we receive for that two cents, could we do better on our own with that two cents, and can folks watch their two cents better than we can watch it now?
Then after that we all know what the big prize is, our own ISD. A smaller system, a system close to home, and a system you could watch more easily. A good ISD would keep young families in EBR, and not push them down the interstates.
But the city has to come first. That's my two cents.

If things going the way they are, St. George is going to want to beef up police service.

EBR Sheriff serves the St. George area.
St. George Fire Department is the fire department out there.
I just don't understand why they are fighting this so hard, especially when the Metro Council wants to run things "their way." They wanted a democrat to replace Buddy Amoroso's seat even though his district is heavily conservative.

They're going to need over 14,000.

You'll be waiting a very long time. It's the definition of a double standard, but you won't hear a peep from TogetherBR, OneBR, etc.
I can't imagine what the city of Baton Rouge will be like with Broome presiding over a city council comprised of Chauna Banks clones. Will they divert all of the city's resources to NBR and let everything else go to shite? I imagine that it will only serve to hasten white flight out of the city limits.
Posted on 9/7/18 at 9:50 am to doubleb
They better get 30,000 signatures to account for all the "issues" they will have.
Posted on 9/7/18 at 9:51 am to dewster
The powers in BR don’t want to allow a vote because they know it will pass. That would then crush BR budget. The ones that talk about having a metro council that is only made up of people within the city limits will get their wish. The people of NBR think it’s bad now. Wait until the funding from the taxes pulled in from SE BR go away. Gary Chambers & Silky Slim would loose their free money from SWB. The St. George movement should have happened when Central & Baker was allowed to separate from BR

An economic development district is not the same thing as a city. Just saying.

FWIW, earlier this week, The mayor and BRAC came out against the split.

Doubled has the folks of St. George put together a plan with approximate cost per student if an ISD is created?
St. George has this in the bag if they focus on ISD and how much EBR spends per student and how much some of the fabulous ISDs in Houston area spend with amazing results.

What makes more sense? Continue with the status quo of the middle class fleeing the parish with haste? Continue to have shite arse schools, continue to have shite arse crime?
Or try something new? Something that has proven to work locally with central? Something that would have a net positive impact on the parish as a whole by keeping tax paying citizens IN THE PARISH instead of moving out to LP and AP to raise their kids and then drive into EBR for work?
You can continue down the path that leads in failure and poverty. Or you can take a chance with something new.
