Was America built on the backs of slaves?

It was built mainly by Legal immigrants.
Meaning immigrants since you just had to show up at the port/border and say I'm here. No such thing as illegal immigrants back then. But cheap immigrant labor built america. They were often exploited and turned into indentured workers but they technically weren't slaves.

Slaves were one factor among many. To totally dismiss slavery as helping build the US is a bit disingenuous

From what I'm reading, 12.6% of the US population as of 1860 were slaves.
I find it hard to believe that 12.6% of the population did all of the work, while the the other 87.4% sat back and laughed them while sipping iced tea.
You don’t think democrats lie do you???

How would the lives be of the current black people in America be if their ancestors had never been brought here?

Weren't a whole hell of a lot of slaves of any kind in the first 100 - 200 years when pilgrims were carving out an existence along the New England and mid-Atlantic coasts and inlands setting the FOUNDATION for 'Murica. Those bastards were tough as leather...

No, it's their new shtick
They literally make shite up to deflect from their crime ridden communities.
over 70 fricking people were shot this week in Chicago, 40 this weekend so far.
25 shot in a 2 1/2 hour span.

The majority of the world and the greatest empires were “built” on the backs of slaves.

not even close to being the same as

black slaves.
one entered in to a voluntary contract (the circumstances may have been shitty) and one was either born in to it or kidnapped from their home and forced in to it.

Undeniably slave labor contributed to the growth of the US.
So did the ALSO LEGAL exploitation of the (in no particular order)-

Welsh
French
Danes
Germans
Austrians
Swiss
Italians
Spanish
Portuguese
Greeks
Croats
Serbs
Albanians
Montenegrins
Poles
Swedes
Finns
Norwegians
Latvians
Lithuanians
Estonians
Russians
Belorussians
Czechs
Slovaks
Ukrainians
Amongst others....
If we are going down the reparations rabbit hole, almost everyone is entitled to some share...

What slave we talking about the Irish, African, or Indians not the dot kind.
The Irish were never slaves. They may have been indentured servants and (depending on the contract) it may or not have been permanent. But their were laws that protected migrant workers. Very minimal compared to today, but they existed.
Indian reservations had more rights and some were given complete sovereignty. Some of these still exist today.
Comparing Irish manufacturing ot Indian relocation to slavery is being very dishonest to all groups involved.

Why did people downvote this? This is really, a fact. It's like down voting someone for saying the sky is blue.

They worked alongside the slaves, they weren’t paid for their labor, and a lot of them were in fact kidnapped from their homes and brought over (especially the Irish)

Was about to post the same question.
It really makes no sense and to act like slavery had nothing to do with the earlt success of the US shows a complete lack of understanding of history.
I would argue that without slavery, the US would have failed long before the civil war.
This is not an endorsement of slavery at all. It is obviously wrong on all levels. But facts are facts. Free labor particularly in the early days of agriculture in this country was a gigantic factor in getting the nation off the ground.

I'm not sure that is accurate. The agrarian south may not have thrived as quickly. But it wouldn't have failed. People would have figured out other ways to harvest cotton.
In fact, without slavery, the industrial revolution may have happened sooner.
As much as it is a stain on our history, we do have to at least acknowledge the existence and contributions of the American slave trade.
