The pharmacy chain revealed the reasons behind its decision to close the Walgreens at 86th in Cottage Grove in the Chatham neighborhood of Chicago at a town hall in the community on Saturday.
"I'm here today because we're closing the store at 86th and Cottage Grove. But I just want to make sure everyone understands closing stores [is] not our goal. This is the last resort," Walgreens regional Vice President Reginald Johnson said, according to Fox 32 Chicago.
Walgreens executives revealed at the town hall that the location lost over $1 million last year amid softening prescription sales and significant levels of theft, which resulted in the decision to close the store on June 4.
Johnson said that "theft at this store is 16%," which is "four times above the company average," which contributed to losses at the store.
The company said that it took measures to counteract theft at the store, but was unable to put an end to the issues at the location.
"Lock boxes help us protect the merchandise in the store. A lot of the time, those lock boxes were getting destroyed. And that's at a great cost to the company," said Walgreens district manager Jason Vasquez, according to Fox 32's report.

The local community has held gatherings outside the store to protest the closing. Classic case of the community blaming the business, rather than taking accountability for their community. Walgreens didn't fail the South Chicago community, the South Chicago community failed Walgreens.

Well lady, tell "your people" to quit stealing shite....
Besides there's no laws requiring businesses to stay at a particular location...

Pre Katrina, the Sav A Center on Franklin Ave and Leon C Simon in New Orleans was losing something close to a million a year in due to shrinkage from shoplifiting.
It got so bad they hired a security guard. But the guards really couldn't do much. So the manages would often chase after the shoplifters and attempt to get the items back. It was a shite show.
I worked in the same shopping strip as that Sav A Center, and it was the highlight of an otherwise dreary work day to watch a manger go running out of the store and confront a Shaniqua who was hell bent on taking a whole baked ham home with her for free.

These stores need to go the old Service Merchandise route where you order and pay then the items roll out and you pick them up.
Cant pay first? No items.
No account on file? Cant come in.

For clarification, when she says they have been "patronizing this place for decades", and "the children can't get the things they need", is she substituting patronizing and get the things they need for stealing?
Also, they closed the store, what is the point of protesting that location? Do you think they are concerned that you are going to stop spending your money there?

It was on the news here about a year ago putting pressure on an HEB in the hood because they closed all their self checkout lanes due to theft.
You can imagine the racism chants and voices speaking out from the usual suspects.

“you can’t just close and leave us with nothing!!”
and the obvious reply that nobody wants to hear…
“why not?”

The store would end up making more money if they boycotted it, tbh

I stayed at what used to be the Indigo Inn near State and Rush in Chicago for a month about 14-15 years ago and needed some toiletry item, there was a Walgreens a short walk away and I couldn't believe how it looked inside, almost everything was under some sort of lockdown, an employee more or less guarding the two entrances/exits, the manager looked at me when I walked in and sort of smiled a smile of relief, pretty sad state

Wouldn't this be the case for any store/restaurant/festival?
