Last time they had a meeting, and talked about this, it was pretty much 100% against moving the Zoo. And the 5 people that spoke out against moving it were all White.

One might say that sections of O'Neal Lane particularly near O'Neal Place and St. Jean Apartments closely resembles the location of the BR Zoo today.

My take on it.
There is currently a fence around the property with wild animals on it that keep the locals at bay.
Move the zoo, take down the fence and your renovated park will be destroyed within 6 months like everything else public funds pays to build. Look at all of the new schools, they don't respect or appreciate anything.
I think they need to close the zoo and just let the property go to shite. At least they won't waste millions of tax dollars for it to look the same in 6-12 months.

Gary, the Zoo is not in Baker, Carl Dunn is doing a great job there as Chief of Police. However, for people to get to the zoo, after exiting the Interstate, they must pass one project on hwy 19 (east side) & then there is one, less than a block off hwy 19 on Blount Rd. Also, it's close proximity to Gore Rd. is a negative issue ... it has not been that long ago that the EBRSO wouldn't even go on a call on that rd. w/o at least three or four units. That area and the surrounding area of Scotlandville are NOT safe. Now, Gary, you know people have to travel thru the ghetto to reach the zoo! STOP w/ the Baker crap - Baker is safe, Carl is doing a great job, but the zoo is NOT in his jurisdiction and you know it!!! If the zoo is to expand and become what it can become, it MUST be in SBR.

Somebody giving it to Gravy on his site.

For the record, I don't go to the BR Zoo. Why? It's a shite hole located in a shite hole of an area

I sincerely hope it stays right where it is currently located.

Why?

Sounds like you would go if it moved.

Unfortunately this is Baton Rouge, where there can never be too much property tax.

Our property taxes are pretty low comparatively. Now, if you want to argue that we get basically zero in return, you'd have a point

Perhaps in a twist of irony, the property immediately east of St. Jean Apts, approx 860 acres, has been the topic of discussion on possible locations the zoo could relocate to. I live a short distance to the east of there and I'm not quite sure how i'd feel about that.

Yeah, there are bunch of neighborhoods just like White Oak Landing, Lake at White Oak, and Shenandoah near the current zoo.

Compared to where? States with no income tax and lower sales taxes.

Audubon Zoo should be the only zoo in the state

I would add the Alexandria Zoo and Zoosiana in Broussard (privately owned and operated) to that list as well. Monroe and Baton Rouge are the only two zoos I've been to where I honestly felt the animals were not in a good situation due to habitat upkeep and general demeanor.

Wasn't all of that underwater last August?

I know they could build it all up to above those flood levels, but now you're adding a lot of money to the project.

La cannot seem to balance a budget, educate our young'uns, repair our potholes, keep guns out of felon's hands, or provide any time of healthcare for the poor, but we can sure come up with 150 million to move a pretty nice zoo across town. I sure hope they don't waste 150 million on drainage or completing the diversion canal. I want to smell elephant farts in south BR !!

Yeah, pretty much, but 95% of the property that flooded in August has never flooded before and may never flood again.

This is exactly how I feel.

This need not be a North v South BR argument, or a White v Black argument. The argument should be whether or not we need to be spending 140 million dollars of our money on a zoo and park when the organization responsible for the zoo and parks has let the current zoo run down to the point where it is in such bad shape.

The argument needs to be about what EBR Parish needs the most, and not about building zoos, Trams, bicycle paths to the casino, etc.

The parish can't fix bridges, clean out canals, stripe roads, pick up litter fix road signs, or run an efficient permit office. The city has an undermanned police force, and we can't even hire a CAO without falling on our faces. We need to do a better job of spending our money.

If the zoo was being put in a perfect location (close to the interstate, within walking distance of other popular attractions, more convenient to Ascension and Livingston Parish residents, etc) then I would be all for it. However, the only sites I have seen seriously considered are near the Fair Grounds on Airline near Bayou Manchac and out near Laberge off of Nicholson. Those locations are awful, possibly worse than where it is now.

Where it needs to be is on the old 9-hole golf course at City Park. It's one of only 2 golf courses that consistently fail to turn a profit, it would be walking distance to the children's museum, art museum, and LSU, it's right off of the interstate, BREC already owns the land. They could build a really nice (albeit, small footprint) zoo there with a parking garage (that they could make a killing with on gamedays) and it would be a gorgeous addition to that neighborhood. Since it's right across the street from a historic black neighborhood, the race-baiters would have no ammunition.

Here's another idea: with the River District in limbo, why not just buy the land there and turn it into the zoo? It would be on the streetcar line between LSU and downtown, close to the interstate, and right across the street from the plantation. You could even piggyback classroom and administrative space to run both BREC attractions.

What about all of that vacant land across Kennilworth from the skate park and Olympia Stadium?
