Vote on moving Baton Rouge Zoo, expanding Greenwood Park expected Today

The board that oversees East Baton Rouge's park system is expected to vote Thursday whether to move ahead with a controversial proposal to relocate the Baton Rouge Zoo while giving Greenwood Park an extensive makeover.
The vote should happen during the board's monthly meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Baton Rouge Recreation and Parks Commission's headquarters, 6201 Florida Boulevard.
Over the past month, BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight and Zoo Director Phil Frost have publicly tried to make a case for their visions for the zoo and for Greenwood Park, after holding more than 100 private meetings about the plans over the course of a year.
The location for a potential new zoo has yet to be determined, but BREC is looking to spend $110 million to build a state-of-the-art zoo with more interactive activities. They hope to build it on donated land.
The public agency also proposes to spend $40 million on an expansion of Greenwood Park — next to the current zoo location near Baker — which would include a water park, horse trails, zip lines, a carousel, soccer fields and more.
BREC has not announced the specifics of how it would pay for the expensive plan. McKnight has said the agency would seek support from private philanthropists before asking taxpayers to help.
The proposals have drawn sharp criticism from some, although others welcome the proposed changes.
Many north Baton Rouge political leaders have pushed back against the possibility of losing the zoo, saying it would be yet another blow to the side of town that has drawn little development and lost many amenities over the past few decades.
Gravy not too happy with thought of the zoo potentially moving

It is white privilege.
No one wants to bring their kids to NBR to hang around black privilege.

$150M to relocate a zoo and expand a park??? Seems like some monkey business to me.

That is the starting point.
Has a govt project ever come in on time and under budget?
Greenwood park expansion
- numbers will jump alone from the restless locals borrowing the construction company and Brec's equipment. Years ago they had a park under the interstate they were opening on a Sat. Brec had to delay it because the restless locals borrowed all the picnic tables.
PS- NBR, the zoo would not have to move if the people of NBR would support it. Guess what the numbers show people in NBR do not support the zoo.
Why would you keep it there?
The people who support the zoo do not live or want to visit NBR!

And people outside NBR aren't gonna come to support a zoo in that shithole. Sorry, but it's true.

We take our grandson a couple times a year with me packing. They need to move it.

Two thoughts:
1. The local power brokers have decided this, like everything they see, is about race. So they will bus in 150 unemployed people in t-shirts to the meeting and whoop and holler until the people on the BREC Board chicken out on the vote.
2. They already tax the shite out of my property for BREC and now they want $150 million more? frick that. How is it the Board can just decide to spend an amount like that not in their budget with a stated plan to "ask" for public funds down the road? Hell no.

quote:I just don't understand how this is possible. With all of North Baton Rouge's beautiful scenery and landscape and it being such a wonderful area with great people, it's just mind boggling that more people/businesses don't invest more in that area.

Seriously, frick every politician that wants to force money into NBR. It's a shite hole and will remain a shite hole until the people of that community actually start giving a damn about themselves, first and foremost, among many other problems.
Keeping the BR zoo in Baker is just a waste of money. No one goes there with the intention of spending money anywhere around the zoo. It's a shithole and people that go to the zoo spend their money before they go towards North BR/Baker, a little bit at the zoo and then when they make it back to their side of town. The majority of people with kids that go to the zoo are too afraid to stop and spend money anywhere near the zoo.
And the amusement park crap is just bringing stupidity to another level.

Unfortunately this is Baton Rouge, where there can never be too much property tax.

I sincerely hope it stays right where it is currently located. But the melt from Chauna Banks would be glorious and a welcome sight to see if it does get relocated to the O'Neal Lane area.
For the record, I don't go to the BR Zoo. Why? It's a shite hole located in a shite hole of an area.

Can you imagine the cluster had the zoo been off O'Neal last August?
What was found by the flooded walmarks?
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

The zoo is not in NBR, it's not inside the city limits.
I'd say it's more like Baker than BR.

Audubon Zoo should be the only zoo in the state
Only group that has the ability and funding to care for the animals as well as possible

OH whatever dude... Its not a trip to a zoo unless you get shot, stabbed, or carjacked. That's what makes zoos interesting.

BR has an obsession with copying NOLA ideas. I don't know why no one in charge can't think outside the box instead of trying to duplicate something 70 miles down the road.

Cronyism at it's finest, folks. Don't vote on things, just decide to use taxpayer money to boost your buddy's construction business.
When is that swamp getting drained, again?
