Many standby tickets are buddy passes so I don't feel bad for those. They know what they are getting into.

As for overbooking, sometimes there's an equipment change that affects flights. I think if an airlines overbooks more than 2 or 3 spots, it looks pretty bad. I had a flight recently that overbooked by 10. Everything was figured out, but there's more to it than just selling 110 tickets to 100 seats.

They could have sold exactly the number of seats available and still had this issue of needing to get a crew to SDF.

No passenger should have his seat bumped because an airline can't work out the logistics of getting their crew to work on time.

Why should a customer be inconvenienced because of an airline's staff issues?

Uh, because you can't fly a plane without them?

Like someone said earlier...when it comes to something like this you're dealing with two bad situations. Don't get the crew on that flight and an entire plane is delayed tomorrow. IDB 4 passengers and you run the risk of running into someone this irate they can't act like an adult and get off the plane themselves.

And your issue here lies with crew rest/timing rules set by the same DOT that you want more oversight with overbooking situations.

United is garbage. There's a reason that they're almost always dead last in customer satisfaction surveys among the large US airlines. I've only flown them once over the past several years, thankfully

I mean, I get that they want to be as efficient as possible, but I think every single flight I've taken for the last 2 years has included a complete cluster at the gate desk for 45 minutes before the flight leaves.

If it was really that important he could have discussed this calmly with the flight crew.

By having the crew sit in coach? . I didn't know UA had their stewardesses etc sit with the people they were serving.

So have the crew fly on another airline if the initial one is booked. There are solutions around this. Of course it costs UA more money and they find it easier to kick off paying passengers than pay for their own workers to get to work on time. It makes sense.

It just doesn't look good when stuff like this happens.

UA could solve this problem by not overbooking. Just a thought.

That would cost a frickton of money from failing to resell tickets provided by the no-shows. Most airlines lose money as it is.

Why can't the crew drive the 4.5 hours? Pay them some sort of bonus for their troubles.

If it's as rare as Golfer leads us to believe it won't cost them much money.

thats what I said. also it doesn't matter if he is a doctor. unless he is going do surgery its not more important than other peoples lives.

ETA: unless he does fake tits.
the only exception to the rule

I'm talking about the flight they were shuttling this crew to.

Well, Flight 3411 left at 7:42pm. AA's last direct from ORD had already departed.

Southwest had a direct from Midway, but that would have cut it close to get to MDW from ORD and no clue if they had availability.

My assumption is given the weather and flight disruptions over the last few days, crews are shorthanded and timing out. Another UA flight from another hub (IAH, EWR, etc.) got to SDF with a timed out crew. That's when the situation arose to get a replacement crew to SDF.

I agree it doesn't look good and UA should have gone higher on the VDB offering given that it was a crew replacement situation.

There is an easy solution to this.
Dare I suggest to a business in this era of subsidies and corporate welfare that they actually use the free market?
Keep upping the price - eventually some will give up there seats.
This is particularly necessary since they were forcing people off to make room for THEIR employees.

UAL stopped the bidding at $800. That was the problem.

IDB's are rare because most of they time they get people to VDB.

That guy acted like a baby, both in the noises he made and in failing to recognize that he doesn't have a right to be on the flight once United tells him to leave.

Outrage over this is dumb. This moron will make millions off of much ado about nothing.
