GFY. You want to act all high and mighty. Do you read every contract of every single thing you do? Those things are intentionally long and impossible to read for those of us without law degrees.
I actually had this situation happen recently. Swore up and down with a company I had a service contract with that it was for 18 months. When it was actually only 12. Once I got a copy of it, I understood my position and didn't press further. However, I didn't need to have the cops called on me because I remained professional when discussing it with them.
If he would have read it, he would realize that he likely would have gotten more than $800. This time in cash, and a refund of his flight.

I just initial/sign whatever documents I am presented, without question. It saves so much time. Who has time to read about things that are, evidently, worth the time to put into a contract?

Thanks for proving my point.
Look, I agree United FUBAR'd this by not going higher with the VDB's and likely failed to properly explain the situation to the passenger. That doesn't excuse him from acting like a 3 year old.

I guarantee you don't read every word of everything you do. When you buy a ticket online to a concert, you read those terms of service? Every single word? Don't lie. If you do then it sure must be nice to have that much time on your hands.

That would cost a frickton of money from failing to resell tickets provided by the no-shows. Most airlines lose money as it is.
Why does that matter? They've already paid fir the ticket plus any cancellation/swap fee.
Airlines lose money, as any business, bc of a shitty business model.

$800 is a reasonable sum of money, and it's entirely reasonable to have a policy that includes forcible removal of someone who refuses to de-board.

If you owned a business and someone refused to leave, would you just sit there patiently waiting for them to change their mind?

i agree with drexyl. airlines need to rethink their shite

Asking any business to "rethink" something that happens 0.00004% of the time is insanity.

I get that it could've been handled differently. But he was refusing to get off the plane. Isn't it more the security guy that grabbed him who was overzealous in this situation?

that passengers about to be like:

You want to hide behind the ridiculous fine print in the "contract" then fine. I'll happily point out that this guy is protected by the first amendment of the constitution to say/behave however he wants if he's not endangering other people, which by all accounts he was not doing. And how that perfectly legal behavior did not justify him being assaulted while being forcibly removed from a plane against his will.
Then we'll get past the ridiculous legalese and into the court of public opinion, which is where this incident is currently being debated and united is coming in decidedly on the losing end. You will continue to bemoan United getting a "bad rap" for people not understanding things. At the end of all this, United will likely be paying, both literally and in customer goodwill, much more than the $1500 voucher it would've taken to get a passenger off the plane, in order to accommodate their own frickup.
But hey, screw that guy for acting like a 3 year old, amirite?

I'm just laughing at the screeching noises that guy made while also recognizing that he got screwed at the same time

Forget the situation that led to this incident, but how are cops/security expected to remove a passenger who refuses to leave a plane?

I wasn't referring to the process of kicking the guy off the plane.
