So in one breath you tell me it doesn't happen, then the next that it happens occasionally?
United IDB's an average of 10 out of the 250,000 people they transport daily. That's pretty rare and within any standard deviation of predictive modeling programs. When unpredictable things such as weather, crew shortages, and equipment swaps occur, that's what will throw the predictors out of whack. And they're still at a very small number.

Cancel the following flight from Louisville. "Sorry we fricked up with our logistics. Hopefully we get better."
And we're back at square one with way more than 4 passengers impacted. All who paid for tickets, just like these 4.

They are not doing this. They are predicting they *will* be able to fulfill it and fully expect that is what will happen. However, occasionally they're wrong and that is why the contract clearly states how that will be handled.

So? That's UA's problem. Not the one passenger that's has a very bad day. Maybe they need a better system of getting their workers to work on time and not screwing over their passengers.

You seem to be under the misunderstanding that buying a ticket entitles you to be flown from point A to point B. It does not and never has.
All it does is enter you into a contract with the airline - a contract with very specific terms. One of those terms is that you may get bumped involuntarily, and if you are you get compensation for it.

damn, last time i was on a flight that was overbooked, they offered up this deal to fly Next flight in 3 hours or next day:
$200 cash
Flight in 3 hours or Free hotel and fly out next morning
a shite load of air miles
tickets for next flight came with the american private lounge passes
I tried to take the deal, my wife was yelling at me. I almost told her to "frick Off" as loud as i could.
Neither of us had to be back home, and the free night stay was at a nice hotel in Chicago. Plus $200 each.
With no plans, i cannot see not taking that deal.

How can anyone here justify a business selling services it knows it can't fulfill?

Haven't read through the thread, I'm sure it's been said a few times, but why wouldn't they just keep offering more and more until someone took the offer?

I would love for an airline to advertise this message.
You're correct of course that it is the contract people sign when they get on with an airline, which is why they can do the legal dance and say "told ya so".
It just doesn't look good when it gets exposed in the national press like you're seeing on Twitter/the news at the moment.

So if I sell 35 tickets for a 30 seat airplane, you think that's ok because I am expecting those 5 not to show up?

but it wasn't. it was 4.5 and their were 4 of them. they could each drive 1 hour 10 minutes
And they had to fly a plane early in the morning. Would that have fallen under the automatic amount of hours of "not working" to fly the plane first thing in the morning?
They have federal regulations that all airlines must abide. I'm under the impression that if this was the last flight of the night, and they had to fly out early, driving through the night would at best delay the early morning flight the next day, only furthering the problem they already had.
United failed by not offering more voucher money, plain and simple. The passenger acted like a baby but he'll certainly have the last laugh in this.

If I could fly naked, I would. Since I can't, I dress as comfortably as possible (Sweats, T-Shirt). I change in to business wear when I arrive at my destination.
shite and take the chance that I get seated next to a hottie when I look like shite. no thanks

What about the other two goons? Those skypigs need to be fired, and hopefully the only security job they'll find is at a mall.

Would you have them agree to terms stating that they could possibly be bumped from the flight before they paid you?

quote:Maybe not, but the alternative would be all of us bitching because of how much more expensive flights would cost.

Some people go straight to meetings or even have a flight in and out of a city in the same day.

Is it really too much to ask that if I buy a ticket I expect them to fly me out as close as feasibly possible to the date and time of the ticket I purchased?

Overlooking is normal. In fact most Alaska Airline flights you'll have volunteers at the counter long before status is known.

I go up early and ask if they need any volunteers early on and they usually put me on the list then so I can be first to receive a voucher.
