The whole concept of pets pisses me off. People need to quit with this shite.

More distressing than seeing actual humans suffer and die?

Who would have thought?
I've probably spent $1000 this year alone at the vet.

While you're a dipshit for that comment, the topic is very interesting to me.

3 friends of mine have committed suicide in the last 5 yrs. 2 were not unexpected as they were the publicly confident almost cocky guys who went way overboard trying to look good and put on a facade to friends while struggling with depression behind closed doors. And men rarely get the help they need. But that's another topic...

The 3rd... was a very humble and compassionate veterinarian who I knew from playing rugby in Baton Rouge(she played for LSU and BR Womens team).
Her suicide caught everyone by surprise as she seemed so fulfilled in life. After graduating LSU Vet School she had taken off for the PNW.
I kept up with her posts on FB where she'd be delivering horse babies in the middle of the night and other awesome stuff vets do. Very tragic and sad to us back here in BR who knew her.

So that's an interesting stat and perspective.

Oh again. You're a dick for the $1000 comment.

It’s sad what some professions are perceived to make, but in reality it’s different. Most vets I know are very passionate about what they do.

You mean the education system is a major scam?

Guarantee no one blames the university though.

It all depends. If you own the practice you can do quite well. I knew several vets that had their own practice in Lake Charles, still do, and they have very nice houses.

I dated a vet and she had a huge chip on her shoulder about not being an MD. Got pretty annoying, especially when she would try and convince people that being a vet is not a respected profession.

There are a bunch of anti-vetites out there.

I figured dentist would top the list. My dentist said you have to be a little off to stick your hand in somebody's mouth.
I have three labs. Each yearly checkup (stool sample, blood work, rabies shot, physical check like ears, listening to the heart, rub down of the whole body and heartworm pill for 6 months) over 200.00 per. Hell heartworm med are 20.00 a month, that 240 a year times 3. Then there's the ear infections and other run ins that add up. Looked at insurance, and that shite was high as giraffe pu**y. My vet who I've been with for over 30 has had his own practice since he started. And now his sons and daughter in law are taking over when he retires. Just built a new office that I guess cost probably close to a million to build. So he aint doing to bad. Hard to believe the starting salary isn't higher than 65-70 grand. My granddaughter who just graduated from OT school is stating out at just over 80,000.00.

harder profession because the patient cannot give you any information about their problem and when and how it started.

The "easy" part about being a vet is that you aren't dealing with human beings. The liability just isn't the same, no matter how you look at it. Most vets (although that # is decreasing) don't carry malpractice insurance. Another ding against their salaries.
Gotta start your own animal hospital and I believe you have to get into the agricultural / livestock side to make real money.

I'd have a difficult time psychologically killing an old dog.

She has two newer vets working for her and they both have $200k or more in student loans, one went to LSU, the other went to an island school

200k for LSU?

My little sister is about to graduate from MSU vet school and I think she told me her debt will be a little over 100k.

True, but they are far outnumbered by the folks who consider veterinarian to be a respectable profession. It's kind of like cops, teachers, and nurses saying they aren't respected because of a few bad apples.

I'm sure she did, she obsessed over it, though. Getting in to LSU vet school is a pretty big accomplishment but she needed external validation from literally EVERYBODY. She couldn't let shite go.

Our daughter is a vet. My wife and I have discussed this before and it is due to the fact that it is a high stressed, long hour job that is consistently surrounded by death by either the animal dying or they have to euthanize them.

Our daughter is one too! And yes, what you stated is so true.

at $3600, I tend to agree with you. I think I would weigh every cost at the vet vs "how much does a new dog cost". If it goes over 2x "new puppy" cost, I would consider the Ol' Yeller + new puppy combo.

I was waiting to see the Vet when and old lady came in with a dog on a leash. The dog was so old and fat it was difficult to tell its sex. As the lady talked to the receptionist I noticed the dog would constantly sit and jump back up. It would stand for a minute then sit. Immediately it would jump back to its feet. Apparently it was in constant pain, but sitting was worse than standing.
The lady told the receptionist that the dog had constant diarrhea and other problems and they wanted it euthanized. Her gutless husband had given her the unpleasant task.
Then they called the lady back to dispose of the carcass. The landfills won't accept dead animals from Vets but will from an individual.
I had sympathy for her but didn't have an answer for her problems.

Construction workers are number 1? I wonder why that is. Especially union workers. They have great benefits, good pay, and usually don't even work at a fast pace.

I did labor for many years and the only real stress was me dealing with the business side. The actual work itself was quite stress relieving.
