Do you prefer a vacation that requires you to "go go go" or a more "beach" type vacation where you just relax?
i would say, "bit of both" but i have no desire to take a vacation where the plan for the day involves sitting by a pool.
we went to Broken Bow, OK last christmas and it was a great experience, but there was a time where the people i was with wanted to watch a show on HBO Max, so i just left the cabin and hiked for an hour and a half by myself.

Depends on the city. Mountains, scenic views, and waterfront I prefer lazy. Urban areas is a go go go vacation.

When I was a child, my parents took vacation each year. They loved to drive and "see the sights". An example of a vacation for them is to drive 10-12 hours each day, seeing things while in the car. As a child, this was miserable. Vacation was enjoyable for them - horrible for a child.
When I got married, my idea of vacation is to go to the beach, sit on the beach and read or "play in the water". My time at home is very busy so I need true relaxation while on vacation. Definitely do not want to stay in bed - we normally get up by 7 but still just like to take it easy.

Relax. All day long. I hate the hustle and bustle when I get back to work and already feel drained.

i took a single vacation as a child. we drove to the southwest and looked at things like the Mesa Cliff Dwellings, Carlsbad Caverns (those were cool,) Native American Museum, 4 corners etc. as a young kid it was effing miserable.
one day my parents just wanted to drive around New Mexico. We stopped for gas, lunch, dinner, and the hotel.

I crave both honestly. Sometime we're in the mood to see a new city and everything it has to offer...coming up we have a houseboat on a secluded lake rented.

I've done a lot of solo activities on group vacations for the same reason. I don't even watch TV at home. I'm sure as hell not doing it on an expensive vacation.

If it’s just the wife and I give me a go go go trip. Not necessarily agenda or site seeing driven, but definitely get out of the room early and come back late.
With kids it’s not a vacation it’s just parenting on the road. Give me something more relaxed like the beach.
Not sure where a ski trip falls into the paradigm but that is a trip we do each year. It’s kind of both. You do the same thing in the same spot each day, but it’s by no means lounging around.

The best plans are no plans .

I draw a distinction between “going on vacation” and “traveling”. I go on vacation to restore the body. I travel to restore the mind. Some trips can manage to do both, but most are heavily weighted in one direction over the other. And if I had to guess, I probably travel 3:1 over going on vacation.

We usually do at least one of each every year.
We do short beach trips. Won't go to the beach for a full week. Usually just 3-4 days. That shite gets boring fast.
We then do outdoorsy destinations. All over CO, Sedona,Yosemite, Yellowstone etc. These are a mix of relaxing and hiking, checking out the scenery.
Then we have our go go go trips like DC, NYC, Chicago, etc, where, like someone else said I'm not paying money to hang out at a downtown Marriot all day.

We usually end up doing both. Wife loves to make a schedule that would impress a drill Sargent. Kids and I play along until we can’t take it anymore then stage a full on mutiny. The remainder of the vacay ends up being mostly unplanned with an occasional giving in to the “schedule”.

I don't mind a weekend of hustle and bustle. A week is too much.

Something in between. I don’t mind sitting on the beach for a day or two, but I eventually get restless and need some other outlet.

This kinda illustrates why I never go on vacation with anyone but my wife. we've been invited to a ton of group vacations and always decline. I learned years ago that everyone has different ideas of what to do on vacation, different eating schedules and restaurant preferences. If I'm gonna spend money and take time off I'm gonna spend it doing what we like to do

For a while, I've believed that life is all about anticipation and recollection. You can look forward to something for months, then it will be over before you know it. However, there is joy to be had getting excited for a trip and remembering a trip.
Having said all that, I like to do things on trips. I've gone on a couple of baby moons with my wife before our 2nd and 3rd kids. They were at a beach resort. Since she was pregnant, we didn't plan anything while there. While it was enjoyable, there is nothing we reminisce about after the fact. So, if I'm paying for a trip. I want to do memorable things.

Yep. We went on a vacation with a couple that we are still very close with..
.. but we will never vacation with them again. Probably with anyone, TBH.
People's habits and routines are too different. Being at the mercy of someone else's preferences is absolute misery.

Right there with ya. Doing the beach or anywhere with my wife and kids is great. Adding ANYONE else, it's a trainwreck
