Has anyone successfully navigated the VA process for getting disability benefits for an elderly parent? The amount of paperwork is astronomical and seems designed to discourage old people from even attempting to fill out. Does anyone know if there are VA representatives that help people out with the process? I've heard of an independent organization called Patriot Angels that helps people for a fee. Anyone use them with success?

Contact your local DAV rep. They can help immensely!

Shameful. Veterans should get our first priority. Instead we give it to those who get their feeling hurt over the truth. Clown world.

There are organizations that can help and there are actually advocates within the VA that can help.

It is a typical government process as far as an incredible amount of paperwork goes, but there is also the ability for some decent outcomes. WHen did your parent serve?

I always go directly into the local VA facility. Have his DD-214 handy and other documents you may have and they are a lot more helpful than wasting time on phone. Sign up with my health vet too, it has somewhat useful info on it. If hes healthy enough I would bring him with me.

I have a feeling you’ll have major problems proving that any of the disabilities are service related. The longer time that passes after they PCS, the harder it’ll be to prove that their disability was cause by the military and not just old age.

Unless they were exposed to Agent Orange.

Not VA reps, but there are veterans organizations that will assist. I'd contact the local VFW or American Legion. They'll be able to help directly, or point you to an organization that can.

That's the route I went when I was leaving active duty, and the Texas veteran's org that I used handled everything. Filing, filling out paperwork, the whole nine yards. Made the process painless.

ETA: DAV is another one to try that greygoose brought up above.

I would look up local VSOs(Veteran Service Organizations). American Legion, DAV, VFW, etc have people that will help you navigate. There are also attorneys that specialize in dealing with the VA.

Go to the link below and find the Veteran Service Officer for the parish your dad lives in.

Louisiana Department of Veteran Affairs

Also, like some of the others have said, DAV, VFW, American Legion are helpful as well.

My wife was talking with Patriot Angels (charges several hundred $$), but someone at the veteran's home referred her to a local service officer, and he took care of the application for no charge.

Are you trying to get the aid and attendance pension? The issue with using free organizations, etc. is that they are backlogged and don't really know what they're doing when it comes to stuff like aid and attendance pension planning.

Frick a VSO especially in the Nola area. Do the pay route. I used veterans guardian after trying on my own etc. No good VSO in the area.

If I might ask, what is the benefit that is being filed for?
Do not and I repeat do not pay anyone any money to do this for you.

1. Do you have POA?
2. You need to obtain all available records from service.
3. All of this can be done by using the services the sate or fed provide.

You can also seek help from your federal representative or senator. They should have a staff assistant that can help with obtaining all records.

Here are some useful links as well:
LA DVA Field Service Rep
LA DAV

If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask me. I will do every thing to help guide you through this.

Some states have Veterans assistance offices that can help with medical claims, appeals and other benefits.

I found out I have Non Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2016.
Three Dr.s have written letters saying it is from exposure from Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. One of the Dr.s was on the original study team that determined the different cancers abused by Agent Orange. Even stated he’d swear under oath in a court of law.
Filed a disability claim, took almost two years for the VA to say it’s not service related. Filed an appeal in 2018. Will take 2 to 6 years .

Find an advocate. There's no charge and they'll help with the paperwork. Or go directly to the VA. They won't hardly even talk to you without a DD214. And they'll need to request service medical records. The process takes time. But any money will be retroactive to the filing date.
