And likely resent him for it. Not for working hard, but for foregoing everything else in order to do so.

He set up his family for generations. He sacrificed for them, and although he has regrets, he will be known as a legend for the next several generations. My grandfather was a legend. Worked a hard arse blue collar job but made education his top priority for the future, and funded his children and his grandchildren's education. He was gone all the time too.
We as grandchildren took it to the next level, and now live a very privileged lifestyle most people in this world could only dream of. It all started with a man who "was never there for his family."

But those kids at least know he worked his arse off
Most of the workaholic financial success scenarios I’ve seen resulted in the wife cheating or divorcing and the kids being happy to spend the trust fund checks but being distant and or messed up and resentful while the dad tries to beg his way back in while the kids are in their late teens or 20s.
You have four areas to allocate time to:
-success
-family
-health
-personal life/hobbies
With a young family you can choose to exceed a baseline in one area for awhile but eventually you usually have to pay the piper in one of the others to remain too far out of whack chasing business success.
It’s why many of the most financially successful people I’ve met put off the kids and wife while they built the business or went through a divorce in the process.
Doesn’t mean it’s impossible, it’s just really hard to thread the needle in industries that require tons of time to thrive.

He should give us our name back.

Plenty of people have worked the crazy long hours and missed time with their kids. And they didn’t make billions. Workaholics gonna workaholic.

When he dies he will go into the same size hole as everyone else.

I agree with this. Sure, he sacrificed time with his family but he also set up his kids (& probably grandkids) for a life. They are not chasing a dollar to make ends meet. Which means they will be able to enjoy more quality time with their families. In this case, the sacrifice is worth the legacy he left for generations.

Hell, everyone that is successful does that to one degree or another. If you want a high-maintenance wife, spoiled kids, and to be a socialite yourself, then you choose that lifestyle. Leave out just one of those indulgences and you can have a good balance,

He died in 2009 almost 20 years ago. WTF op.
He bought the jazz for $22 mil and sold them for $1.2 bil. I think his kids likely forgave him. That allowed him to have some great times with his family and grandkids that less than 1% will ever be able to achieve.

Many do this, for a lot less success / money

Leave your kids enough money to do something, but not enough that they don't do anything.
Posted on 3/14/26 at 10:31 am to Street Hawk
You can do both. My grandfather started his own business after he got back from WW2. He busted his arse to get to where he ended up while raising 6 kids and was extremely successful and my family lives an amazing life bc of him. But he ALWAYS made sure family came first. He lost his dad when he was 3 and made sure to always be there for his kids. He is and always has been my hero in life.

He should have considered a few days off here and there for "load management".
