Not sure how the actual World Cup was politicized. The only thing I remember was when Rapinoe said she wouldn't visit the White House when asked about it by a reporter.
She stood for the National Anthem in every game.

She's been playing a sport her whole life which got her a free education, sponsors, and a career. She's never had a real job in her life and was just fine playing soccer during the Bush/Obama years but now all of a sudden she's oppressed
She could go to the White House and have a discussion with him and see what happens, but that might blow up in her face

If you would follow the simple string of comments in that particular discussion, you would understand that someone asked "what are they protesting", and the other dude responded "I THINK that it's oppression regarding gays and minorities". It didn't say that there WAS oppression, but that that was what they are protesting.
