In the quarter-century since High Times magazine proclaimed April 20 a time to light up and smoke marijuana, traffic fatalities have spiked 12 percent on that date, compared to one week before or after, a new study shows.

Why is that?

removes the stigma

removes the need to hide

greater awareness

imagine alcohol being illegal, but everyone decided 1 day a year we would all get drunk...can you imagine how that would turn out?

I can see this.

Wouldn’t hiding it (which likely involves smoking at home) decrease traffic fatalities?

Maybe it’s Nazi only pot smokers who are celebrating too much on April 20th...

Though the study could not assess whether marijuana-intoxicated drivers caused the surge in vehicle deaths on the counter-cultural "High Holiday" dubbed "4/20," they appear to be the most likely culprits, Staples said in a phone interview.

If only we had a study to determine that.

Also, congrats on the obvious take. There is also a surge of stupidity- and drunkenness-in-public-related arrests around Mardi Gras. An individual's irresponsibility is not and indictment on the thing; Tigerdroppings doesn't make me addicted to not working--I just lack the discipline to get off it while at work.

How does he know it's not due to the extra traffic from food delivery services?

I wonder how much traffic fatalities increase after major holidays like Mardi Gras, St. Patty's Day, Cinco de Mayo, etc?

LINK

About 25% increase in traffic deaths on July 4th and New Years. From around 90 per day to 118.

I wonder if drunks would deny the validity of the common sense study that showed that was the case.

The increased risk of fatal traffic crashes on April 20 was comparable in magnitude to the increased traffic risks observed on Super Bowl Sunday, the authors write.

Marijuana prohibition hasn't worked and has been bad for our country. We shouldn't be putting people in jail for smoking a plant

But what about all the people (LEO, Judges, lawyers, bondsman, lab techs, not to mention Big Pharma) that it keeps employed? Where are they supposed to work?

That sucks, but, so? Does this not happen after other celebrated days/holidays? NYE? Mardi Gras? Bike Rallys? Memorial Day on the River?

Some people don't know how to be celebrate responsibly. This isn't shocking.

I don't smoke pot or do drugs. Im just not naive in thinking pot is a dangerous drug like alcohol is. Alcohol rips more families apart and kills more than all the other dangerous drugs combined.
