The US is getting another federal service academy, with a twist; while the new Space Academy will train cadets for the Space Force, it'll also have a civilian cadet track for the US space industry. It joins the Military, Air Force, Naval, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine academies.

quote:

President Donald Trump last week signed an executive order creating a commission to develop plans for the United States Space Academy, which is intended to “educate and develop the next generation of leaders across the space domain.” The initiative was first announced when Trump visited the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, on Aug. 28 to present the crew of Artemis II with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. The crew was recognized for their 10-day lunar flyby in April, which took them farther from Earth than any human had ever traveled. “Given the rapid growth of the Space Force and the commercial space industry and the expansion of our ambitions to the moon and far beyond the moon,” Trump said while giving remarks at the ceremony, “it’s clear we will need to educate and train an entire generation of skilled service members, engineers, and civil operators.” The proposed academy is envisioned as serving the military, civil government, and broader space industry. However, the exact admissions requirements for Space Academy—which will help characterize who it serves and how—are yet to be determined. Future Space Force officers currently attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.

I wish to God that I was 20 years old again. I’d jump all over this knowing what I know now,

What an amazing way to launch your career with ZERO tuition or certification cost.

Nicholls is building a new Maritime Academy, maybe they could pair it with the Space Academy for water recovery.

The president can create a commission. An academy can only be created by Congress due to the need for new funding.
For location, I would expect it to be as close to NASA facilities as possible. Houston or near Cape Canaveral/Orlando would be the most likely locations. Huntsville could be a dark horse, but I expect better access to launch sites than Alabama can provide. The other possibility would be Colorado Springs to allow for crossover with the Air Force Academy.

To be fair, this is an example of something a national government should actually be investing in.

Assuming we could get in. This will draw an insane amount of qualified applicants, and even more so because of the novelty.

Merchant Marine vs Coast Guard is a decent watch if you're into triple option football. It's the JV JV JV JV JV version of Army-Navy but it's usually on ESPN+ every year.
