Well the kid was 19 months here. Kinda question what the parents were doing.
fricked up situation.

Had a drowning last night too. There were a bunch of anesthesiologist around, kid was pulled out quickly and intubated. Didn’t help.
Dad was distraught, mom hadn’t made it yet. It took everything for all the staff to keep from breaking down. Can’t imagine the amount of pain they will go through, and hope I never have to.

Just in time for grandkids.

I can’t read it. I don’t know how people continue to live life in that pain, but they do. I admire them.

Often it’s parties.
Just happened at a friend of mine’s house a month or so ago. Employer was hosting a party for employees. Employees child had all his flotation on all day. Takes it off to go to the restroom. Everyone migrated inside for snacks. Child instinctively jumped back in the pool forgetting to put his flotation back on. Absolutely devastating for the parents and the employer. Hate reading/hearing about these things.

A couple of years back a kid drowned at a party with adults watching. The kids were playing a game to see who could stay underwater the longest. This kid actually drowned while playing the game, the parents pulled him out and did cpr but it was too late.

That always makes me nervous. We have a pool and if I see kids playing that I immediately make them stop or get out of the pool. Just too dangerous.

We've talked about getting a pool but one of our kids is a year and a half old. I've convinced everyone we're not doing shite until he's at least 5.

I watch my little boy like a hawk, but dang they are fast. We were at a friends house when he was like 2 with quite few people, birthday party or whatever, and they had a pool. I lost site of him for a few seconds and had a friend bring him to me "he was haning out on the steps of the pool".
A lot of times, it's as simple as one parent thought the other parent was watching them. Let's not judge without knowing anything.
ETA My wife likes to look at house listings, and any time she pulls up one with a pool, I automatically veto.

guys, I don't care if your kids know how to swim, my too oldest (7&5) know how to swim, put a fence up around the pool. I have a 2 1/2 year old and when we put the pool in last year it was a demand I had. we went with the water warden fence. Its simple to install or have somebody install with a simple hand held core drill or hammer drill. the gate shuts automatic, the pin to open it is still to high for my 7 year old and it has a lock on it. Putting in a pool was one of the best deicsions I have ever made, but the fence was an even better idea. One of my main worries is a neighbor kid wondering into the back yard by going through a gate in the wooden fence. I couldn't live with my self if i lost a child nor if my pure cheapness cost the life of another child.
with the fences today, they look classy and are removable once the kids are really old enough(10+ imo)
Honestly I don't if we will take ours down so long as there are lots of neighborhood kids around, just scares me knowing one of them could just walk through the gates on the outside fence.

Yea, you right.
When we're at parties, cook outs, etc where there's a pool, my wife and I literally "tag" each other in and out WWF-style so that there's zero confusion over whether or not someone is directly watching the kids.

With all due respect to anyone coming on here talking about safety measures, without knowing the details we simply don't what happened. It takes 30 seconds for a kid that age to drown, that's the amount of time it takes to find the last juice box in the back of your fridge for your other kid. This was in California where they could likely use their pool almost year round, the kids were very used to the pool. Very sad situation.

My son has been doing swimming lessons since he was one. Had his first swimming lesson of the year last night and even though there were three teachers in the pool plus a lifeguard, I didn't take my eyes off of him the whole time. My in-laws have a pool and my parents live on a lake. He has no fear of the water which is good and bad thing so swimming lessons are important.

We were having a crawfish boil by my brothers pool 3-4 years ago. I was rinsing them when I notice my friend run and jump in the pool near the side where I was tending to the crawfish. He pulled his son out who was apparently face first in the water. Luckily he started breathing and everything was fine. Freaked me the frick out since I sort of felt responsible because I was the closest adult.

Never take your eyes off of the child that does not know how to swim, never.

Very sad, met him several times. Awful.

They are so fast. Two weeks ago, I get a call from my mother-in-law that my two year old fell in the pool. I hear sirens in the background. Your heart absolutely sinks. I can’t describe it accurately. She never lost consciousness and the EMT’S didn’t feel like she needed to go to the hospital. We insisted she go for “dry drowning “ protocol. It can happen in an instant. My heart hurts for that family. Prayers

Man, that is terrible...I don't think I could recover from something like that.
Know what you mean. A guy I worked with years ago took his young daughter out trawling with him one day and for whatever reason, she didn't have a life jacket on. She fell overboard when he was keeping an eye on where he was going in a tight bayou and when he looked back, she was gone.
He immediately stopped the boat and pulled up the net and his little girl was in it dead.
He still lives with that to this day and that was over 30 yrs. ago. You know he blames himself for not having her with a lifejacket on and keeping a better eye on her.
I know I would if it were me.
