LL, did you pay for school? I know you posted a lot about working and always thought you paid your own way.

No. I had TOPS and my parents paid the difference. I have worked since I was 15 because rent, bills, anything you want to do for fun, etc. ain't free.

I'm definitely not against loans. I struggled even having my parents' help. But I am completely against not paying them back. And I know a LOT of people who used their student loans for stupid shite all 4 years of college. I had many friends take the maximum amount out in loans to pay for an apartment, food, shopping, studying abroad, etc.

How is getting a loan and not paying it back different from stealing?

Not allowing these loans to be discharged is why they are so affordable.

Which is exactly the problem. The banks offering these loans are not at risk for them. If we put these loans in the same category as other loans, they would be a lot harder to get. And rightly so, because 18 yr olds with zero collateral and no job shouldn't be able to take out 10's of thousands of dollars in loans, because they're a high risk client for the banks. Move it back to the same free market principles that all other loans operate under. Including bankruptcy.

Sounds more like felony theft, not a student loan. Loans are meant to be repaid. My question is what took the government so long to act on this guy? Uncle Sam generally has no problem garnishing wages for such debt.

This is exactly why we need student loan forgiveness. We don't need the gestapo bashing into people's homes at gunpoint. Why seven marshals?

Yes, maybe this guy should have paid his student loan, but no, we don't need law enforcement involved.

Clearly, we need law enforcement going after these thugs.

I'd like to see everyone that's delinquent rounded up and arrested.

Probably fell off of his credit history/rating years ago.

But, if they're going to start doing this, they better start building a ton more jails. WE won't have the resources to hold these people. Millions of people are in arrears on student loan debt.

I didn't even realize that it was a crime to not pay your student loans. I thought it was simply a civil matter where they could garnish wages.

Aside from just shitting on the taxpayers by forgiving this guy's loan, what would you suggest?

They weren't arrested for not paying but for not showing up for Court (which is still wrong).

quote:

The government asks debtors to pay their loans or provide financial information, and if those requests go unanswered, a court orders the debtors to appear before magistrate judges with the information.

If a debtor does not show up for court, the judge can issue an arrest warrant.

Once the loans go to collection, you might as well be dealing with loan sharks. The collection agencies pile on fees. The student loan program is ridiculous, we need free tuition assistance rather than loans.

student loan forgiveness is as much bullshite as bailing out the banks, auto industry, or any other entity. I'm not advocating sending in the US Marshals, but if you borrow money, you have to pay it back. Simple as that.

well who would you suggest we get to handle it? The IRS? A judge?

Reason number 9,586,432 to pay back your cheap loans on time.

Georgia started a new policy this year of taking people's State tax return if they owe money to the legal system (tickets or fines).

I would rather see the Federal Government do this with tax returns to pay student loans than arresting people.

You have to look at the big picture. I don't want to hurt the taxpayers, but we need to fix the problem, not stick people in jail.

This guy is a bad example since he had 25 years to pay $1500. Most involves large loan amounts that will never be repaid. So, they should be forgiven.

One reason tuition is so high is the availability of student loans. There's no pressure on a college to reduce costs because of the student loan program.

but I'm also not sure that debtor's prison is the right answer.

clearly not. Without having read the article (I will), I assume that there was some post-judgment discovery, debtor failed to respond, creditor got an order compelling same, debtor ignored that order, court held debtor in contempt until he responds, creditor enforced said order via marshall.

even that is absurd and amounts to debtor's prison, but at least the debtor can purge himself of contempt by responding to the requests.

but yeah, pay or defer is a lot easier.

In true 2016 American fashion, he's come forward to bitch about being to lazy to pay off $1500. Sad
