We got rid of debtor's prison a long time ago. I can't believe that anyone would support this crap. If you do I hope you get locked up for being late on your cable bill
I wonder what the legal basis for this is?

You're assuming these types of people can save up like that.
$30k/year + dining out for every meal + going out for drinks every night + rent/bills .. probably means these people aren't saving up stacks. I know for the person I know in particular, their debit card has been declined for $11 in my presence.

If somebody borrowed money from me and didn't pay I'd be pissed to. If I had the power to arrest them I would.

How about we just get rid student loans? Why are my tax dollars subsidizing other people's liberal arts degree?

I better start saving bail money. I am the youngest of four, the oldest sibling being 12 years older than me, and I am the first one to pay off my student loans. Even my mom hasn't (though she went to college at 40 and got her masters).

I'm not reading the article, but I have no doubt that a judgment has been issued by a judge and a warrant was ordered. Marshals aren't arresting these folks on a whim.
If a judge has issued warrants, it's a sign that the debtors ignored other efforts to get them to pay, defer, or whatever. If they can't pay, they need to prove they absolutely CAN NOT pay. Do they own property? Do they have luxury items in their home?
Hey debtor, no more free ride. Stop spending money on Internet porn and start making payments on what you owe.

I don't pay my taxes that fund these welfare bums, I go to prison.
I'll allow the same on student loans.

And that's something people are willing to post about? Don't take out loans if you aren't going to pay them back.

I've got no problem with the LOANS. But they are LOANS, not GRANTS. They must be paid back with interest.

He says seven deputy US Marshals showed up at his home with guns and took him to federal court where he had to sign a payment plan for the 29-year-old school loan.
He was never going to pay back that loan. Never.

LL, did you pay for school? I know you posted a lot about working and always thought you paid your own way.
I'm asking b/c I don't know any females that worked their way thru school and I'm curious as to what a girl would do to make that type of money. I mean they most likely won't work offshore of for UPS like some of the guys I know that paid for school did.

Would work until someone got liens on you and took your car or whatever other property they could get and also started garnishing your wages. People can run and hide but it won't last forever, plus that is no way to live.

He couldn't pay a $1,500 student loan back in damned near 30 years??? He deserves to be arrested.

You know that a loan is something that has to be paid back right and in these cases it is with interest?

i imagine that they're not being "arrested"
there is likely a judgment against the debtor
some kind of judgment debtor rule is issued ordering the debtor into court to declare employment, property, and assets
my best guess is the person didn't think it was real court or something when they got the summons and didn't go, then a warrant was issues for that. OR, they're just getting a summons via marshall to show up in court for the hearing.
but it sounds better to make it seem dramatic
