It's not as easy as you think. It's all in the planning and stop sequence from the time you leave the building in the morning. All it takes is a few mistakes, a little traffic, a broken elevator, a few packages misloaded in the wrong section or found on the floor behind a bulk stop and your whole day is fricked up.

That's going to change in the very near future. Thanks to systems automation, connected devices in vehicles (otherwise known as the "internet of things" or IoT), and data analytics, routes can be planned and optimized in real time.

School districts are using this in buses, same goes for first responders. I would not be shocked if carriers are already doing this or in the process of doing so.

What the Hell are people doing pushing shitty degrees in college for people who would be a lot better off in one of these career tracks?

I wasn't familiar with what UPS may be doing but an old boss of mine was one of the lead data engineers at FedEx. Their logistical system is nothing short of amazing.

I can only laugh at the no-nothings who think that shitty employees are protected by the union when it comes to construction/skilled trades.

It's just the company line that people have unfortunately had beaten into their heads over the years. It's been very good propaganda.

That's a very good question.

My uncle was the union rep in Nola for a long, long time.

He hated the employees

He loved UPS

When you have to point out the 1920s as the last example of a time Unions got it right, you probably shouldn't be defending them

Germs make you sick. Temperature differential has nothing to do with it.

I am sure all the anti-union people who think we live in a “free market” economy, have no issues with corporations spending millions on lobbying and trade associations.

I don't advocate a strike right now for the Glorious Teamsters of UPS.

What I would like to say is that I am thoroughly amused by all of the college boys in this thread who never had to work through college because Mommy and Daddy paid their way. Naturally they come out of the woodwork to bash the hard-working Teamsters of UPS.

Temperature differential makes the body weak or weaker, which then allows bacteria and virus to thrive.

I worked for UPS in college for about 3 hours. Walked out in the middle of my first shift lol

The strike of 97' opened the door for FedEx Ground and Home Delivery.

I did not realize this. We use FedEx Ground all the time. We were UPS only, up until a few years ago. FedEx is a pain in the arse for Ground though...you can't drop it off at the little boxes that are outside of a lot of businesses. UPS does not do this, from what I remember.

Nevertheless, I remember the 1997 debacle...had to go wait in line at the old FedEx spot off Industriplex (since we could no longer use UPS at this point). The line was out of the building, and all of us were pissed the F off

You were certainly not alone. About one in ten new employees made it past their probation to become permanent employee Teamsters. Most quit because they had absolutely no idea how tough it is to perform heavy manual labor inside 40 foot trailers that had been outside all day in the summer Louisiana sun. Once they realized that the brutality of the work situation created by the heat required an equally brutal individual commitment to endure the pain and discomfort, they realized that they couldn't muster that level of commitment.

I was using combat boots for my work boots. The leather rotted off of my feet and fell apart. The rubber soles endured but dead animal flesh could not. Only the men endured.
