You are correct and the market would bear this out without the interference of the unions. Unions do what any large bureaucratic group(government) does, skews the market.
The free market is just as prone to favoritism as anything else. Without responsible regulation, you invite regulatory capture and the formation of cartels.

quote:Okay, so as an individual blue collar service worker, I’m supposed to negotiate a fair rate of compensation for my skills from an international Fortune 100 company. Gotcha.
If you truly have unique talent, you don’t need a union
Fortunately, we have a union to negotiate fair wages, and, in fact, the rates they negotiate for us even benefit non-union workers in smaller companies, since our rates set the industry average. If service company XYZ tries to pay less, all their best potential candidates will come work for us. XYZ will either have to raise wages or close up shop. Capitalism, bitch.
Of course we could each individually negotiate compensation with our (huge) company, but that approach would leave the company free to drive down rates overall and, ultimately, lead to lower pay (and higher corporate profits) across the board. That may be a desirable goal for some folks, but from my vantage point, there’s nothing wrong with a group of employees leveraging their collective bargaining power to negotiate wages commensurate with both their skill/worth and the company’s profitability. In that sense, it’s basically nothing more than a single employee negotiating a wage with a small employer—just done at a macro level.
All of that said, public sector unions can EAD.

I always thought is was humorous when goobers would strike for an extra dollar an hour, yet be off work three months with no income to get it.

You act like it's still the guilded age and you don't have access to information in the palm of your hand.

Unions have outlived heir utility. People are no longer paid in scrip, tied to a company town working deadly jobs.
Unions, like ALPA and APA are nothing more than cartels.

The CDL is definitely worth money. Any driver works long days in hard, physical conditions. You try to hold down their pay because you don't think they're worth more than $12 an hour, and the driver shortage will get worse.

You act like corporations won't fire employees and hire cheaper ones just to put a few bucks in the shareholders pockets.

And then wages increase because the company has to attract workers. This is happening in professional sectors all over this country. Wages at banks, for example, have risen a lot in the past year because a lot of what used to he bankers are now going to tech or other industries.

Unions, for those not talented nor smart enough to negotiate a term of employment for themselves.

Of course they will, is it a right to keep a job that you provide no value for? If you provide value or have a skillset thats not easily obtainable you'll be fine. It's really expensive to hire new people.

The professional driver shortage is not a new issue. They've had shortages for years. Why isn't pay going up?

So I had an Amazon package delivered by UPS waiting at my door. The box looked crushed and by picking the box up it fell apart, literally.

This is naive.

I have zero fear of ever losing my job because of my skillset and I have recruiters messaging me weekly for new jobs.

Congratulations for working a high demand field, and for making yourself more skilled and marketable through training and networking.
Not every industry is like that, and not every employee has the same opportunities. If they want to join a union and negotiate en masse for better conditions, good for them.
I'd certainly prefer that to modern-day feudalism.

Then let the free market take care of it
Absolutely. I wasn't trying to make the point that it shouldn't. I was just giving my personal take on the value of Labor. I'll always defer to Market forces.
I'm on the Austrian economics side, bro.

Cannot happen today with all of the information available to employees. Sounds like you are in favor of handouts and laziness of people that want more money but don't want to work for it.

What is the free market? It's just individuals doing what's in their own best interest. Do you not show favoritism to your friends and family members over strangers? This is the nature of humans.
In the free-market all exchanges are voluntary and they wouldn't take place unless they benefited both parties involved.

The regulations and their agencies are exactly what causes regulatory capture. If they didn't exist regulatory capture couldn't occur. Any ill that's said to be cured through regulations can be resolved judicially through the courts or prevented by the threat thereof.
Are you completely unaware of how many department heads of government Regulatory Agencies end up back in high-paying corporate jobs after their stint "serving the public" is over? How do you think they get those jobs In former Industries they were just regulating the year before? It's the fox watching the hen house
