The issue with UPS is that being a driver should not be a long term career. Its a stagnant position that you don't improve on much after 2-3 years. Certainly not compared to other jobs.
You have a bunch of 35-50 year old guys that have been doing it for 15+ years that expect better wages. When there's really no reason they can't hire someone young at 15 an hour.
Its the same thing as the auto industry. Their wages are flat because they can train young people to do the job for $12-18/ hour. Its laughable to pay some 50 year old guy $35/ hour to do a job that a 22 year old with 2 years of experience can do.
That has absolutely nothing to do with anything but basic economics. If you want a pay raise and you want better wages, you have to justify it over someone with less experience. Driving a truck and delivering packages is only so hard and can only bring in so much money. A 10 year vet can't deliver exponentially more packages than a 2 year person.

That's short-sighted thinking.
A guy with 10 years experience may not be able to deliver three times as many packages as an inexperienced guy, but they will be faster, they will be more efficient, and with gradually increasing pay over time, you will earn loyalty from them.
People that have never worked that kind of job think that you can hire anybody to do it for $12/hour. The reality is, people will take that job when desperate then leave as soon as possible, and the turnover will rival the service industry.
High turnover is bad for any industry.

Yeah, you right. My bad, this is what I get for trying to think before coffee. Nothing to see here...

It looks like customers will still get their packages delivered.
Teamsters negotiators say they have tentatively agreed to a new five-year contract with United Parcel Service.
The deal promises to raise wages for existing workers but creates a new class of lower-paid drivers to handle weekend deliveries, according to Dow Jones.
The agreement must be finalized and then ratified by a membership vote.
The current deal expires on July 31.

The new contract provides hourly wage increases totaling $4.15 over five years and raises the starting wage for part-time workers to $13 an hour as of Aug. 1, with increases in subsequent years.
The settlement also creates a new category of "hybrid drivers" that would normally work on weekends, allowing the company to expand its Saturday delivery and potentially add Sunday services.
The starting hourly pay for these full-time workers is $20.50 and tops out at about $35, the union said.
UPS executives have expressed confidence the two sides would reach an agreement, avoiding the first strike at the company since 1997.

How so? What incentive does a business owner have to not hire the cheapest labor?

United Parcel Service (UPS) workers have given their union the go-ahead to call a strike in what would be their first walkout in decades. The vote gives union negotiators more sway in contract talks with the shipping giant.
Well...they have been looking for a way to save the US Postal Service...killing UPS could be a start.

Good labor ain’t cheap. There is always a healthy median for both sides.

Yeah.......I pretty much felt the same way about that argument.

High turnover isn’t bad in accounting, it’s a good thing from a wage perspective

Right. As an employee, you'll be better off financially in the long run if you change companies every few years. You'll make more money hiring on as a new employee every 5 years or so than you would if you stuck around one company for 20 years.
ETA: I don't think high turnover would be good for UPS business, however.

Back when I started the starting pay was 8.50/hour.
The turnover rate for part-time is really high.
1)People don't want to work
2) may stay part time up to 20ish years
3)See #2 some centers pt may only get 10 hours a week
4) really hot, physical labor

But it's good for stockholders, so frick the working man.
Probably the majority of American workers are stockholders, or have a vested interest in stock market performance in some way such as company pension funds.
