You did the right thing. Call them up and ask them to balance the till and look at the video. That's about all you can do.

Why don’t you just pay with a card? I’m somewhat of the opinion that most who pay with cash are a tad bit on the trashy side. My evidence is limited but most who I see paying for things with cash are usually a bit trashy. Use a debit card. Better yet, use your credit card and pay it off for points.

The play here is go home and accept defeat. You didn’t count your change immediately, you don’t get a second chance

Most cash registers made in the last 20 years literally TELLS the cashier how much change to give you
Math has nothing to do with it
Although them actually correctly counting the money they are handing you could be a problem

Was this at BetR?
Same thing happened to my wife (no pics) there.
Cashier lapped a bill and manager wouldn't know because the drawer would balance. Stealing from the customers is not a good way to conduct business.

I did this at Cane's one time and ended up showing my arse. I was drunk and it was like 1:45am. I could've sworn I gave the girl at 20 and and she gave me change for a 10. I went off on her and the manager and when I finally got home, I realized I had actually given her a 10.
I felt so bad about it. I even called up there the next day to apologize. Moral of the story, be sure before you show your arse

It’s alway good practice to say something line “out of 100” or “out of 20” when you hand them a bill much larger than what your are purchasing and then look at the money. Some people will try to cheat you out and some will make honest mistakes.

Use a fricking card like the rest of society, save your cash for your bug out fund.

If the cashier was a teenager don't be too upset with them. Kids today can't count or do math. It's sad to watch their little brains fry when they have to.

The cameras won't show that. The register balance will. If they do a count they should be over by that amount. I would insist they go check their balance.

Modern registers use a POS system that automatically calculates change. Typically there are buttons on the screen with different bill denominations ($1, $5, $10, etc.) as well as some sort of manual entry keypad for whenever someone gives you exact change.
You punch in the exact amount the customer gives you, press a button to close the sale, and then the drawer opens, the change displays on the screen, and the receipt prints out.
Now that I think about it, that’s basically how it works with old school cash registers as well.

Only use cash at places that don't take card, but that's on you for not counting the exact change when using cash.
This isn't difficult.
Two brainless idiots with the downvotes.

You paid the cash penalty.
Using a no annual fee card is better. It’s like earning interest on your expenses. Just pay your balance every month.

Was this in Breaux Bridge by chance? Because I was behind someone who didn't have much on the belt and paid with a $100 and got back a $10 and some ones.
