I mean, these cave diver guys seem to specialize in breathing systems

These innovative breathing systems are called rebreathers. Perfect for the work the rescuers are doing as it recycles the gas you are breathing, allowing you to extend your gas supply. But it's not something you will train a kid on in a few days (nor need to, open circuit should be fine.)

Promising update here

Apparently they've been pumping out water so effectively there's a chance they may even be able to walk out soon, although that's still being optimistic and depends on the weather holding.

They've already pumped out 120 million liters and reduced water levels 30-40 percent although it must be noted it hasn't rained in awhile. But even if it does rain soon and reflood everything it should be a matter of time more than anything else.

They were saying that some parts of the cave required the divers to remove their tanks in order to fit thru the passage so that is an added complication.

I've gone cavern diving but going deep into underwater caves is not for me.

It seems like using a commercial diving helmet on each kid would eliminate a lot of issues, they would be feed by hose from a remote air supply, so no tanks or re0breather to deal with, they have a neck seal so as long as they have air pressure its not going to flood with water, no possibility of losing or taking the regulator out of their mouth, and a huge benefit would be having the intercom system to talk to the kids as they moved through the passage maybe helping them keep calm.

Maybe. The thing is, it only took a matter of a few hours to be trapped.

One at a time rescue will take more time than it was for them to be trapped.

I'm glad this happens 10 hours ahead of me, I don't want to watch it.

News also said they found two major water inlets and are re-directing them before the upcoming monsoon rains this weekend.

How did the boys get to where they are? I haven’t followed the story very closely. Did the water come way up after they were already in and it forced them further and further into the cave?

Correct.

Another tidbit I learned today (who am I kidding, it was late last night while aimlessly surfing) is that the team often went to this cave system after practice, this was not by any means their first jaunt.

late to the party but, why can't they just send in divers with spare equipment to lead them out one by one?

They can't lead them out because they have to swim them out. Too many flooded sections of the cave between them and their entrance.
The kids didn't know how to swim, much less cave dive.

AND, multiple news reports say that some of the access points are so narrow that adults have had to remove their air canisters, so they couldn't easily carry a slim child plus his canisters.

To that add agitated fast flowing murky water which the Thai Seals apparently had no experience with before this happened.
They will need someone to talk to the kids to keep each one calm as they move underwater, a whole new thing for them.

Does the kind of rock make digging not really an option without finding a chimney? I have no idea how long it would take to dig this deep.

I don't know anything about drilling. I wonder how long it would take to get the equipment and professionals there and drill down 1/2 mile? It would seem obvious that they would be working this from both angles.

Digging a shaft wouldn't take very long.

A medical assessment of the 12 boys and their football coach stuck in a cave in Northern Thailand has concluded that it is too dangerous to try to move the group out Thursday, according to a member of the Thai Navy Seals who is not authorized to speak to the media. The Seals have also started to pump oxygen into the chamber. Separately, a new doctor's report highlighted that two of the boys and the coach were suffering with exhaustion from malnutrition. Fresh details of the operation underway at the Tham Luang Nang Non to free the team were emerging on Thursday, as rescuers pushed ahead with multiple plans to extricate the group trapped underground for almost two weeks. More rain is forecast this weekend, putting pressure on rescuers to formulate a plan to extract the boys before flood waters rise any higher.

Is this place near the sea or body of water? If not, seems like they could get some badass pumps to get the water out. I bet that coach is near suicidal for leading the kids into that danger.

The team has explored this cave numerous times in the past. Part of a ritual thing for the soccer team. Unfortunate some rains came and flooded them in. Should have reviewed the forecast and not taken any chances.

Reports yesterday were that the boys could hear roosters crowing and dogs barking, so there may be some kind of natural chimney nearby.

And, for reference, the story of Floyd Collins LINK

The site is in northern Thailand almost at the northern border. They are in a mountain but to their south there are agricultural fields, some of which are being flooded by the pumping activites.

The cave is well enough known that the new spot they've retreated to because of rising water at the previous one, the new spot is a ledge called "Women's Boobs" according to this link

Lol, I've never been to Thailand but I think this may be a little off base for most of the country. Much of the world is not capable of simply checking their weather app nor even getting the weather outside of maybe a shite radio report.
